Multimodal Diverse Travel is part of "Macedonia: from fragments to pixels," a special exhibition of prototypical interactive systems with subjects drawn from ancient Macedonia, the result of a collaboration between the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki (AMTh) and the Institute of Computer Science of the Foundation for Research and Technology -- Hellas (ICS-FORTH), hosted by the AMTh. This system enables more than one visitor at the same time to interactively explore information about various areas and points of a map of Macedonia. The system comprises a table, whose surface is covered by a printed map on which the location of various cities and other notable sites is projected. White paper tablets with a coloured frame are at the visitors' disposal. On each tablet a magnifying glass is displayed. When the magnifying glass is placed over a city, related images, videos and texts appear on the tablet. For every city there are multiple information "pages", which can be viewed by touching virtual buttons at the bottom of the tablet. The colour of the frame of each tablet designates the language in which information is presented.

Im Dreiländereck Griechenland, Albanien und der Jugoslawischen Republik von Mazedonien finden wir ein Naturschutzgebiet, welches von über 200 verschiedenen Vogelarten und vielen anderen Tieren bevölkert wird. Es gibt einen Kleinen und den Großen Prespa See -- der kleine See befindet sich auf griechischem Territorium -- durch den großen See verläuft die Grenze zwischen den 3 genannten Staaten. Rund um die Süßwasserseen, welche von reichlich verschiedenen Fischsorten bevölkert werden, findet man Pelikane, Kraniche, Störche, Reiher und viele andere Vögel, die sich im Schilf der Gewässer wohl fühlen. Im Prespa-Gebiet werden Riesenmengen weißer Bohnen (Gigantes) angebaut -- vermutlich die besten der Welt - und jede Familie hat hier mindestens eine Parzelle. Es gibt einen fantastischen Honig, den die fleißigen Bienen nicht nur aus den Blütenpollen der Bohnen gewinnen. Hier ist der Braunbär ebenso zuhause, wie der Wolf. Rund um das Seengebiet laden Fischrestaurants zum Verweilen ein. Die Entfernung in die nächst größeren Städte Florina und Kastoria (Pelze) beträgt jeweils etwa 50 km -- nach Thessaloniki sind es rund 180 km. In etwa 10 Dörfern leben etwa 2000 Menschen. Macedonia's forgotten gem - CNN CNN's Nic Robertson discovers an ancient city of hundreds of churches and monastries. CNN's new series i-List takes you to a different country each month. In May, we visit Macedonia focusing on changes shaping the country's economy, culture and its social fabric. The oldest traces of human habitation in Macedonia are the cryptic, 30000 year-old stone engravings or rock art unearthed in the Kratovo area, as well as the astronomical observatory/ religious ritual site of Taticev Kamen, dating back almost 4000 years. The word Macedonia instantly conjures up memories of Philip II and his son Alexander the Great, legendary emperor of the 4th century BCE who brought great expanses of the known world under Macedonian rule. In this period, and the Hellenistic and Roman ones that followed it, Macedonia reached the apogee of its influence and power. Today, many ruins remain to attest to this ancient heritage, in the sites of cities such as Heraclea, Stobi and Skupi, strewn with amphitheaters and temples, and decorated with intricate mosaics and frescoes. The missionary Apostle Paul brought Christianity to Macedonia for the first time. Nine centuries later, his Byzantine successors Cyril and Methodius created a brand new alphabet, the precursor to Cyrillic, to expedite their missionary work with the Slavic-speaking Orthodox Christians of the Balkans. Ohrid and the lake of the same name are situated in the south west of Macedonia and the 'pearl' of all Macedonian towns has a long and colourful history. It became the centre of Orthodox Christianity in the Balkans and a large number of churches and monasteries were built. The Sveta Bogorodica Perivlepta Church is situated on a hill in the old town and missionaries Kliment and Naum came to Ohrid in 885 AD Kliment became bishop of Ohrid and founded the first Slav academy. Next to the church is Ohrid's famous icon gallery that contains exhibits from the 11th to the 19th century including valuable images of Saint Kliment and Saint Naum. The splendour of the frescos makes it easy to understand why this area has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This treasure trove of Byzantine art and architecture is the birthplace of Slav Christianity. The churches and monasteries of Ohrid look like something straight out of a fairy tale kingdom yet they are the original witnesses of Orthodox Christianity in the Balkans.

That's a hotel in FYROM. U gotta see it. We were at a choir festival in Ohrid, Macedonia.After the Macedonian organizers had booked rooms for us in another hotel, they told us we had to move to a 4star hotel in Struga. The price per night is 33 euros for the regular visitors and 10 for the participants in the festival. I didn't expect a palace but I think for 33 euros I could have at least got a bed and probably some food for all the mice in the room! After a conversation I had, it turned out that the regular price for a room is 80 euros! Skopje Alexander the Great Airport opens the doors to its brand new terminal 06-09-2011 Today, a new chapter in the history of Skopje Alexander the Great Airport begins as it opens the doors to its brand new terminal. The multi million Euro project took just over a year to complete and will allow Macedonia's capital to have the most modern airport facilities in the former Yugoslavia. The new terminal at Skopje Airport is ten times the size of the current terminal building, which was built in 1987 and will be closed as of tomorrow. The new terminal stretches over two levels and 40.100 square metres. Besides the new terminal the runway has been lengthened in order to accommodate larger aircraft. Furthermore, millions have been invested into supporting infrastructure such as access roads, a car park and an administrative office building. The development of the new terminal was made possible by the Turkish airport operator, TAV Holdings, which took over the management of both Skopje and Ohrid airports from the government in early 2010. As a result, attending today's opening ceremony of the new terminal will be the Turkish Prime Minister, Turkish government officials and businessmen. The opening ceremony will take place this afternoon at 13.30 CEST. TAV will now begin work in other fields to improve the airport's offering.
