A church for literally every day of the year could once be found in Ohrid, Macedonia. Although the actual number of chapels has dwindled, this lakeside city has also been called a Slavic Jerusalem for its religious focus. The town and the lake were both made UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1980. The traditional and picturesque houses of Ohrid are part of what makes this, the 7th-largest city in the country, a popular destination. It is the site of many annual music festivals, including the Balkan-wide Ohrid Summer Fest. Translucent blue waters, religious monuments, and fertile history can all be experienced in this graceful community.

Take a tour of St. John Church of Macedonia in Ohrid, Macedonia -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. An ancient Macedonian Orthodox sanctuary sits on Kaneo Beach overlooking Lake Ohrid. St. John Church of Macedonia, named after the Gospel of John, is an incredible example of Byzantine and Armenian architecture in Ohrid, Macedonia. This holy site sits on a rectangular base and presents itself in cruciform shape, with an octagonal dome, and three-sided apse. The precise origins of the church are unknown, but estimates conclude that it was constructed before the foundation of the Ottoman Empire. Ornate frescoes were found in the main dome during restoration work conducted in 1964. Though the church ceased to be an active place of worship after the Turks invaded the Balkans, it is now a pilgrimage site.

Take a tour of Saint Panteleimon in Ohrid, Macedonia -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. Located in a monastic complex in Ohrid, Macedonia is the Byzantine Saint Panteleimon Monastery. The monastery is said to have been built by Saint Clement of Ohrid sometime around the late 9th century in honor of Saint Panteleimon. Panteleimon was martyred by Emperor Maximilian when the ruler condemned him for curing the sick through questionable practices. The monastery is bedecked with colorful and intricate mosaics, which proclaim its importance and beauty to all who visit. Saint Clement himself constructed the monasteries crypt in which he was later entombed. Upon its completion, this stunning, longstanding, and holy structure was used as a liturgical building and school for the teachings of the Cyrillic alphabet.
