Around 1500 Islamist radicals protested today in the Macedonian capital Skopje demanding the release of the five Islamist radical suspects arrested by the police on the 2nd of May following an intensive 3 week investigation of the cold-blooded summary execution of four Macedonian children and one mid-aged Macedonian while they were fishing on Good Friday this year. The Macedonians are predominantly Christians while the ethnic Albanian minority in Macedonia that accounts for around 20% of the population are predominantly Muslims. In the last decade there have been increased incidences of imported radical Islamism from the Middle East that has not found a fertile ground among the Macedonian Albanians despite their attempts to lure them into extremism. However,there are reported Islamist terrorists cells in whole of the South-East Europe region including Macedonia. Albanian Criminal Extremists & Terrorists in Macedonia. November 2007 Operation "Mountain Storm". Authorities are seeking charges of terrorism against 13 suspected ethnic Albanian extremists who the government says were arrested this week with a massive weapons cache that included anti-aircraft missiles and artillery pieces. Six suspected extremists were killed and 13 arrested Wednesday in gun battles with special police officers in and around the mountain village of Brodec near Macedonia's border with Kosovo, according to police. The volatile area was the center of an 2001 uprising by ethnic Albanian rebels. Police spokesman Ivo Kotevski said Friday the government would recommend that charges of terrorism and activities against the state be filed against the suspects — all men — and four accomplices who evaded arrest. Authorities said weapons, seized after the gun battle, were sufficient to equip a battalion of 650 soldiers. They included laser-guided anti-aircraft missiles, artillery pieces, rocket-propelled grenade launchers, sniper rifles, assault rifles, dynamite, hand grenades, mortars and thousands of bullets, police said. The weapons were found Wednesday and Thursday in houses in Brodec, and in buried caches outside the village. "This is the largest amount of weaponry ever seized (in Macedonia), with huge destructive power," Interior Minister Gordana Jankuloska said Friday. Police arrested 20 radical Islamists for the murder of five ethnic Macedonian fishermen in an early morning raid Tuesday, authorities said. The killing last month fueled tension in the tiny Balkan country between majority Macedonians and the mostly Muslim Albanian minority. The suspects have been charged with terrorism. She did not specify whether they all belonged to the same ethnic group, saying simply that they were all Macedonian citizens. Ethnic Albanian Muslims make up a quarter of Macedonia's population of 2.1 million. Most Macedonians are Christian Orthodox. About 800 police were involved in Tuesday's operation, called "Monster," raiding 26 houses around the Macedonian capital of Skopje and seizing weapons, bullet proof vests and Islamic literature. All of the suspects had fought in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The five fishermen, all but one in their 20s, were found dead, shot with at least three different firearms, north of Skopje on April 13. All detainees will face trials under charges of terrorism, association for hostile actions and unlawful manufacturing, keeping and trading of weapons and other explosive materials. Most of the detainees are from the village of Brodec, except one from Tetovo and one from the village of Mala Recica. The Police also revealed the identities of the four fugitives - Lirim Jakupi-Nazi from Serbia, Metin Islami-Talibani, one Albanian and one Kosovar citizens. The Interior Ministry launched the sweeping operation after receiving information that a criminal-extremist group formed jointly by Ramadan Shiti - who was killed in the operation - and the fugitives, was stationed in the stretch of Sara Mountain encompassing the villages of Brodec, Sipkovica and Vesala. a total of six members of the group were killed. The weapons seized in the operation included three mortars along with 111 grenades, two non-recoil cannons with 40 grenades, electronically guided anti-tank missile system Fagot, four anti-aircraft missile launchers, four anti-aircraft missile systems Strela, nine rocket-propelled grenade launchers Zolja, two grenade launchers Osa along with seven missiles, six rocket-propelled grenade launchers RPG along with 132 grenades, one 40mm hand-held grenade launcher MGL-6, hand grenades F1 (58 pieces), 61 land mines, anti-tank mines (29 pieces), four sniper rifles, nine machine guns, 31 trotile charges, two packages containing plastic explosive, and other weapons.
