| | About Macedonians - University of Yale. Duration : 284 Seconds ABOUT MACEDONIANS This video was made by joining various sequences of another and much longer video: www.youtube.com The copyright belongs to the creator of the original video (Yale University) which deserves all my gratitude. INTRODUCTION TO ANCIENT GREEK HISTORY: LECTURE 24 TRANSCRIPT BY PROFESSOR DONALD KAGAN University of Yale December 6, 2007. So, as I say, it's going to be a very major change but it's something that they don't know they're in the middle of watching. Well, in 359 a man called Philip became King of Macedon. We know the Macedonians were fundamentally Greeks. That is to say, they were Greek speakers and ethnically, if there is such a thing, they were Greek. But they were so far out of the mainstream of the development of the Greek poleis that we have been examining this semester that many, many Greeks, perhaps most of them, didn't think of them as being Greek. When Greeks thought about what it was to be a Greek they thought about more than the fact that they spoke the Greek language, they thought fundamentally--if you get to Aristotle you see how thoroughly true this is, it had to do with a culture, a way of life and that way of life was based upon the independent polis. Well, Macedon did not have such a structure. The Greeks called the Macedonians an ethnos, a tribal group is what that sort of means. We use the word "nation" somehow to translate ethnos and that's okay. The word "nation" itself, you remember, comes from the Latin word which means to be ... | | more Ancient Macedonian Artifacts establish the truth Duration : 178 Seconds Copyright: Britannica Encyclopedia Online. Ancient artifacts that have been discovered in Aiani prove that the ancient Macedonian society spoke and wrote in Greek.. Which proves and furthermore supports the evidence towards the fact that Ancient Macedonians were an Ancient Greek tribe. concise.britannica.com "In the necropolis, tens of vases have been discovered. These are of the Macedonian black and white pottery, which was made and used by the tribes of North-West Greece. The Macedonians were part of this group. The pottery of Aiani came from the local workshops; and it's the oldest piece of black and white pottery discovered so far. It was found with Mycenae sherds and can therefore certainly be dated from the fourteenth (14th) century BC. Aiani has given us some of the oldest samples of writing in Macedonia. On small pieces of pottery were let alike inscriptions. We can also make out the name of the dead person: "Pleona" on an archaic mausoleum pillar. The name of the Goddess or mortal: "Themida" is carved on the base of a classical jar, while, from the 5th century BC a bill has survived. An inhabitand of Elimioti carved it in decimals on a piece of pottery. It is clear that these early inscriptions found in Aiani prove that the ancient Macedonian Hellenistic society spoke and wrote in Greek. The remains at Aiani were a major discovery in the region of Upper Macedonia, because there was very little written information about it and what there was, was indirect. The ... | | Microsoft Say Macedonia Duration : 30 Seconds Microsoft Say Macedonia is a campaign which supports the usage of the constitutional name of the Republic of Macedonia in the system and aplicative software of the Microsoft Corporation. The campaign started on June 17th 2007 when the official web page was launched. The goal of the campaign is to animate the institutions of the Republic of Macedonia and the whole macedonian society to find a final solution - usage of the constitutional name of the Republic of Macedonia in the software applications of the Microsoft Corporation. It is the campaigns position that Microsoft is building a non-principle policy towards the Republic of Macedonia in the last 10 years, using the temporary reference FYROM instead of the constitutional name. This is confirmed also by the newest operating system Windows Vista, as well as by all other program packages, where the FYROM reference is used. The campaign also fights against the usage of the Macedonian (FYROM) language in the list of languages, where only Macedonian should be written, since there is no such language Macedonian (FYROM). The campaign is going to take place in several phases, where open letters to the involved parties will be sent, as well as petitions, announcements and other activities. The idea is to get continuous support from the media in the Republic of Macedonia. One of the important characteristics of this campaign is the fact that all activities are performed exclusively via electronic way. In that way the campaign ... The IPPLG was focused on the promotion and improvement of the human rights of Macedonian population with disability, within the current general legislative process in Macedonia. The activities of this lobby-group, but in conjunction with those of the Wider Lobby Group (drawn from all sectors of the community) were focused on ensuring nationwide movement acting towards overcoming strong and still present discrimination against people with disability in Macedonia. Regarding this unique process and lobby-story, as well as regarding all that was done by IPPLG, Polio Plus - movement against disability, being the initiator and creator of this lobby-group, decided to make 'testimony' for the next generations and to document existing and achievements of this lobby-group by movie.
