Paintings by Gjorgje Jovanovik Directed by Sibo This video was made on the principle of old-fashioned handmade - in manual painting. This is dedicated to the artists, who produce artwork with their own hands - without the help of machines. www.baklava.com.mk Psalm (music: E. Hristova, lyrics: V. Martinovski, verse translation: M.Damjanoski) Blessed is the voice that fills the air Bearer of tidings of days gone by Blessed is this never-ending lay, Forever born of pipes and poets The sleepy nightingales sing their sweet song The Psalms echoed by a multitude of strings The cymbals rumble like thunder from the sky The rain barely whispers its sighs Through the leaves that make up its gentle quire, A melody that thrills every fiber Of the body filled with mirth, All rejoicing in the verses' new birth.

Conservation and Restoration of the Wall Paintings from the Episcopal Basilica at Stobi, Macedonia
Duration : 201 Seconds

The fragile glory of the Early Christian frescos in Stobi, Macedonia, is being preserved thanks to a grant from the US Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, a unique type of grant for projects that reflect the rich cultural and historical diversity of the people of Macedonia. The main goal of the project is to perform conservation work on the unique wall paintings in the Episcopal basilica at the site of the ancient town of Stobi, capital of the former Roman province Macedonia Secunda. The Episcopal basilica at Stobi is the oldest Christian church discovered in Macedonia. In fact, the site consists of two buildings, reconstructed and renovated in several phases, which are known as the Old Episcopal Basilica, or the Early Church, and the New Episcopal Basilica. The frescos on the southern wall of the Old Episcopal Basilica, discovered during a combined Yugoslav-American excavation project in the 1970s, were removed from the Basilica walls but remained in situ in a storage depot. They will be restored during this project and then displayed in a museum next to the archeological site. Those on the northern wall, discovered during the 1980s were removed from the walls in 2004. They are badly damaged because of inadequate treatment and poor storage conditions. The conservation of the frescos is being performed in five general phases: 1.Preparatory works. 2.Removal of the frescoes. 3.Transfer of the frescoes from their temporary location in the depot to aluminum honeycomb ...

In 1927 and 1928 he stayed in Paris where he attended Académie de la Grande Chaumière and Ransan. Martinoski is the initiator and he manages the establishment of the Art High School in Skopje, the Association of Artists and the Artistic Gallery in Skopje (now National Gallery of Macedonia). Masks of Imathia: A Macedonian Tradition
Duration : 214 Seconds

the song is called μαύρο κυπαρίσσι (Black Cypress), and the singer is the wonderful Eleftheria Arvanitaki (ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΙΑ ΑΡΒΑΝΙΤΑΚΗ). The paintings are from the 19th century Greek painter Nikolaos Gyzis. Imathia (Ημαθία), sometimes written Emathia, has some of the richest cultural elements of modern Macedonia. One of them is the celebration of masked dancers in Naoussa. There are three origins of this tradition. The first is that in 1705, Turks came to Naoussa to get boys to make them Janissaries. The Greeks there refused, and lead a revolution against the Turkish oppresors, which failed. The year after, the young unmarried men of Naoussa dressed up like this to honour the martyrs who fought for the freedom of Greece. The second origin is a story told the tradition dates from the time of Alexander the Great. When the Greek king died, his body was taken to a secret burial ground. The dance the masked warriors make is an indication of how to find the body that buried in Alexandria. The third origin is that it is rooted in the Anthesteria, the ancient Greek festivals that were celebrated from 1500 BC - 500 AD, in honour of Dionisus. It is possible that the tradition evolved throughout the centuries and incorporates all of these origins, but the last one is the most certain, and it is a 300 year old tradition that has not changed. The point of the video was to answer some confused Slavs of FYROM, who believe that there were no Greeks in Macedonia until 1913. All comments are welcome!

Macedonian Costumes of Florina
Duration : 166 Seconds

The song is Leventikos horos 'the gentleman's dance' or 'Bravery dance' (ΛΕΒΕΝΤΙΚΟΣ ΧΟΡΟΣ), taken from Guardians of Hellenism, Vol. 7 (Macedonia & Thassos). The paintings are mostly from Nicolas Sperling, and the pictures come from the illustrated greek encyclopedia 'The Greek Folk Dress'(Η Ελληνική λαϊκή φορεσία). NOTES ON THE SONG: 'Leventikos: Dance of Florina. It used to be danced by the Slav-speaking people of the region with almost the same steps and music, but they called it ''puschenoto'' (free). Another name for it, which conveys the choreography better, is the 'Lytos' (unfettered), and it is with this name that is had become wide-spread among the dance groups' (p33 of the CD booklet) Florina (Φλώρινα) takes its name from the latin translation Florinon of Chlerinon (Χλέρινον), a tradition that dates from the Crusaders invasion of Northern Greece. The slavic 'Lerin'(Лерин) is a mispelling of the Greek Chlerinon. Featured in this clip are the following municipalities in the Florina prefecture: In Prespes, we see the towns of Antartiko and Kratero. We also see the municipalities of Florina and Amyntaiou. This shows how rich Macedonia is in culture and tradition. I hope everyone enjoys it.

The Macedonian Dynasty of Byzantium
Duration : 151 Seconds

The song 'On the Rose-Bush' - Apano stin triantafylia (ΑΠΑΝΩ ΣΤΗΝ ΤΡΙΑΝΤΑΦΥΛΛΙΑ), is taken from The Guardians of Hellenism, VOL 7, Macedonia and Thassos. The song originates in Polygiros, Chalkidiki. The Macedonian Dynasty of Byzantium (800-1100 AD) saw the tide turning, bringing victories when the Empire was receding and losing against invaders. No other time since Justinian were the borders pushed out again, and not since that time has Christian art flourished in Byzantium than in the Macedonian period. Churches, Mosaics and Icons of that period are some of the most beautiful. Although engaged in warfare against Muslims, the Macedonian dynasty also fought against the Slavic invaders like Simeon the Great and Samuil, both Bulgarian emperors who invaded Macedonia. Despite the aggression, the Slavs became Christians and were inspired by Byzantine culture to form great Christian Empires of their own. Byzantium was a Christian Empire itself from its inception, and its culture was overwhelmingly Greek, though it was a multi-ethnic society. The Emperors were Greeks of Macedonia, and many also traced their origins to Cappadocia and Armenia: Basil I the Macedonian (Βασίλειος Α') (811 - 886, ruled 867 - 886) - married the Varangian Eudokia Ingerina, mistress of Michael III; died in hunting accident (Origin: Armenian, born in Thema Makedonikon) Leo VI the Wise (Λέων ΣΤ' ο Σοφός) (866 - 912, ruled 886 - 912) -- likely son of Basil I and Eudokia Ingerina, possibly the natural son of ...

Krushevo, Republic of Macedonia (1/2)
Duration : 635 Seconds

Mentioned in documents from the 15th century, Krusevo is a living museum, famous for its traditional architecture, cultural sites, and legacy as the site of the great 1903 Ilinden uprising against Ottoman domination. The rebellion failed, but its memory is cherished in Macedonia even today, as a symbol of the national struggle for freedom and democracy; while it lasted only 10 days, the Krusevo Republic of revolutionary leader Nikola Karev represented a desire for self-rule under a modern European political system. Today an enormous monument on the hill above Krusevo marks the elusive dream of the Ilinden revolutionaries. Owing to its high elevation (1300 meters or 4400 feet), Krusevo is also one of Macedonias prime winter sports destinations. Yet this same quality also makes this pine-forested getaway a comfortable destination in summer, when the Krusevo air stays cooler and more pure than in the arid lowlands. The memory of Macedonian artist, Nikola Martinoski, is preserved in a traditional-style house/gallery that contains a huge collection of Martinoskis paintings and drawings, as well as various ethnological artifacts that bring 19th century Macedonia to life. Krusevo was,as well, the hometown of Macedonian most famous pop-singer Tose Proeski (1981-2007). visitkrusevo.com.mk
