Macedonian commemoration plague in Gjakovo to honour Croatian Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer
Duration : 70 Seconds

22.01.09 Macedonian and Croatian delegations erected a commemoration plague in Gjakovo to honour Croatian Bishop Josip Juraj Strosmaer for publishing the Miladinov Brothers' Collection. Konstantin and Dimitar Miladinov had a major role in the waking of the macedonian people and their nationality. With their teaching activities and the collecting of the macedonian folk literary works, they set the grounds for the modern Macedonian literature. Prof. Dr. Wolf Oschlies on the ethnic identity of the Miladinov brothers: "The "Bulgarian Folksongs" compendium by the brothers Dimitria and Konstantin Miladinov, which appeared in Zagreb in 1861 - has so often been presented as evidence of the Bulgarian identity of the Macedonians, there are a few words that should be said: the collection includes 660 folksongs, exactly 77 of them Bulgarian, the rest Macedonian. At the time of its publication there was no such thing as a "Bulgaria" nor a "Macedonia", since both were part of the Turkish Empire - with the result that the Bulgars and the Macedonians were united by a common interest, interest in liberation from the Turks. Seen from this aspect, the purpose of the folksong collection was a twofold one - to introduce the Macedonians to their own ethnic cultural heritage, and to draw the attention of the learned world to the Macedonians. With this latter goal in mind, Konstantin Miladinov, who had studied in Russia on a Bulgarian scholarship and maintained close links with reputable ...
