This technique has been used for centuries in Macedonia and many beautiful and unique jewels and different items are made of which we are marveling even nowadays. In the groundbreaking exhibition 'Heracles to Alexander the Great' the Ashmolean will show more than 500 extraordinary objects, most of which go on display for the first time anywhere in the world. These recent finds were discovered in the royal burial tombs and the palace at Aegae, the ancient capital of Macedon. They rewrite the history of early Greece and tell the story of the royal court and the kings and queens of Macedon, descendants of Heracles whose rule culminated in the empire of Alexander the Great. Aegae remained relatively unknown until 30 years ago when excavations uncovered the unlooted tombs of Philip II and his grandson Alexander IV. Recent work at the site by the 17th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, has continued to unearth a startling wealth of objects — from beautifully intricate gold jewellery, silverware and pottery, to sculpture, mosaic floors and architectural remains.

18.04.09 New significant artefacts dating to the fourth century BC were found by Macedonian archaeologists at the Tsarevi Kuli site near the town of Strumica in eastern Macedonia. The artefacts included coins with the image of the father of Alexander the Great Philip II of Macedon, amphorae, vessels, cups, jewellery, fragments from vases, ceramics and figurines, the Vecher daily newspaper wrote. All these artefacts, according to the publication, testify for the fact that the Strumica Fortress was inhabited around the end of the fourth century BC. The excavations, according to arheologist Ruyak, showed that in the fourth century at the Tsarevi Kuli there was definite activity, and most likely there was a settlement. Some findings, primarily the ceramic vessels, date to the fifth century BC. The Tsarevi Kuli site was used for different purposes during different periods and the findings so far serve to show the continuity of culture in Strumica. According to Ruyak, the city of Strumica and its surroundings have a continuity of culture of 7000 years.
