Belgians tempted by Luxembourg nationality

Weird Gas Stations in Europe (Belgium / Luxembourg)
Duration : 119 Seconds

There is no mystery behind this huge number of gas stations in a small town in the Ardennes. It's the European Union tax system at work. The road itself belongs to Belgium (the country that went for 1 1/2 years without a functional central government), the left kerb where all the stations set up their business is territory of Luxembourg, a small Grand-Duchy, where the petroleum taxes are considerably lower resulting in cheaper fuel. Thatswhy many people drive here just to 'fill 'er up', and shop for some coffee and smokes which are also taxed less heavily here. For their convenience, they put the gas pumps right ON the border.

Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg
Duration : 200 Seconds

Charlotte, Grand Duchess of Luxembourg (Luxembourgish: Charlotte Adelgonde Élise/Elisabeth Marie Wilhelmine vu Lëtzebuerg; Schloss Berg, 23 January 1896 Schloss Fischbach, 9 July 1985) was the second daughter of William IV, Grand Duke of Luxembourg and his wife Marie Anne of Portugal. Her maternal grandparents were Miguel of Portugal and Adelaide of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg. When her older sister Marie-Adélaïde, Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, who had succeeded their father, was forced to abdicate on 14 January 1919, Charlotte became the one who had to deal with the revolutionary tendencies in the country. She was Grand Duchess of Luxembourg from 1919 to 1964. Unlike her sister, she chose not to meddle with its politics. In a referendum about the new constitution on 28 September 1919, 77.8% of the Luxembourgish people voted for the continuation of a Grand Ducal monarchy with Charlotte as head of state. In this constitution, the power of the monarch was severely restricted. During the German occupation in World War II, Charlotte, exiled in London, became an important symbol of national unity. She was the 366th Grand Cross of the Order of the Tower and Sword. After her death, she was interred in the Ducal Crypt of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in the city of Luxembourg.

TEDxLuxembourgCity - Paul Helminger - Midi moins cinq
Duration : 377 Seconds

BIO: A lawyer and father of seven, Paul started his political career in Luxembourg's diplomatic service in London, Helsinki and Geneva before being appointed Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Gaston Thorn in 1974. Paul then went on to become State Secretary for Foreign Trade, Member of Parliament and Mayor of Luxembourg City -- a position he held for 12 years. In between political mandates, Paul has held Managing Director and CEO positions at PC retailer ComputerLand Europe and the consulting boutique SERIE SA. TALK: With regard to our wonderful little country of Luxembourg, Paul will talk about political failure from a different kind of angle: The potential of failure. Or, more accurately, being at the brink of it. In Luxembourg there is a saying that the time is "five minutes to twelve" meaning that this is the last chance to change the course of things. In the very inspiring speech you are about to hear, Paul describes the most pressing political issues that need to be adressed, before that ticking clock of failure runs out.

Margarethe von Trotta is the most important female director of New German Cinema, and one of the most important feminist film makes in the world. From the early 1960s, after returning from Paris to Germany where she was exposed to the films of Ingmar Bergman, von Trotta wanted to direct film but was prevented from doing so because, in her own words, you couldnt think that a woman could be a director. Instead of pursuing directing then, she pursued acting, working closely with both Werner Fassbinder and Volker Schlöndorff, who later became her husband. Her first film, The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum, which she co-directed with Schlöndorff in 1975, narrates the story of a young woman who has a casual affair with a man she later discovers to be a terrorist. In 1977, she wrote and directed her first film, The Second Awakening of Christa Klages which introduced many of the themes of female bonding and the uses and effects of violence that she would return to in her ...

TEDxLuxembourgCity - Manuel Baldauff - Towards Enhanced Democracy
Duration : 709 Seconds

BIO: Manuel started his career in 1995 with Banque Générale du Luxembourg, before moving to Deloitte, where he became a partner in 2002. In 2011, Manuel set up Value Associates SA, a boutique advisory firm offering M&A and corporate finance services to entrepreneurs and family offices. Manuel has co-authored a book and published several articles related to banking, finance and economics. He is a member of the board of directors of Asbl Libertés and the Finance Commission of the City of Luxembourg. TALK: Manuel will talk about his concept of "enhanced democracy". A democracy where people are empowered by information, and not crippled by it. A democracy where people can make choices based on a clear understanding of where their economy is headed and what needs to be done to improve the country's overall conditions. To get there, he suggests the creation of a "council of the wise" that will provide "economic health" indicators transmitted through the media and helping voters understand more about their situation.

Paris on Foot #6 (of 10): Luxembourg Palace & Garden and the Paroisse Saint-Sulpice
Duration : 206 Seconds

And we continue with our latest travel vlog! This time, we went to Paris, France, and we spent 4 days walking around the French capital. On this sixth video, after walking by the river Seine and the Louvre Museum, the Jardin du Carrousel (Jardin des Tuileries) until we get to the Napoleon's Arc de Triomphe, we wake up to go to the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, the Jardin des Plantes and the Luxembourg Palace and garden & Paroisse Saint-Sulpice. Paris is the capital and largest city in France, situated on the river Seine, in northern France, at the heart of the Île-de-France region (or Paris Region, French: Région parisienne). The city of Paris, within its administrative limits largely unchanged since 1860, has an estimated population of 2211297 (January 2008), but the Paris metropolitan area has a population of 11899544 (January 2008), and is one of the most populated metropolitan areas in Europe. Paris was the largest city in the Western world for about 1000 years, prior to the 19th century, and the largest in the entire world between the 16th and 19th centuries. Paris is today one of the world's leading business and cultural centres, and its influences in politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world's major global cities. In 2009 and 2010 Paris was ranked among the three most important and influential cities in the world, among the first three "European cities of the future ...

Greece played basketball while FYROM played politics
Duration : 562 Seconds

When Greece played FYROM in Eurobasket 2009, Greek fans came to see their national team, one of the very best in the world, play basketball, while FYROMians came to play politcs. Greek fans exhibited class while FYROMians exhibited NO CLASS! The FYROMians also got to see their team get destroyed by Greece with the score of 86-54, Also, when the FYROMian anthem was played, none of the Greek fans, in contrast to the FYROMians who booed Greece's anthem. FYROM "A" Team beat Greece's "C" Team 72-58 in Eurobasket 2011 division play and they are under the impression that they are so much better than Greece. They were lucky they didnt play against Greece's "A" Team. Of course, they walked away without a medal so, thus, they continue their non-medal history. They were lucky to have MacCalebb who became naturalized after one year!!! while Greece's players are all Greeks and half-Greeks. If Greece plays FYROM next year in the 2012 pre-Olympic qualifying tournament, they will face against Greece's "A" team and lets see how the do then.
