After more than four decades, the works of Italian surrealist painter Domenico Gnoli are once again on view in New York. The exhibition Domenico Gnoli: Paintings 1964-1969 at Luxembourg & Dayan gallery assembled a selection of 18 of the artist's late paintings and 6 rare drawings. ARTINFO talked with the artist's widow, Jannick Vu, about Domenico's fascination of painting everyday objects and his technique of mixing sand with acrylic to give the work a signature look of texture. The magnified fragment in each painting invites you to take a closer look at the familiarity of life.

Edward Steichen (March 27, 1879--March 25, 1973) was an American photographer, painter, and art gallery and museum curator, born in Bivange, Luxembourg. His family moved to the United States in 1881 and he became a naturalized citizen in 1900. Having established himself as a fine art painter in the beginning of the 20th century, Steichen assumed the pictorialist approach in photography and proved himself a master of it. In 1905, Steichen helped create the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession with Alfred Stieglitz. After World War I, during which he commanded the photographic division of the American Expeditionary Forces, he reverted to straight photography, gradually moving into fashion photography. Steichen's 1928 photo of actress Greta Garbo is recognized as one of the definitive portraits of Garbo. During World War II, he served as Director of the Naval Photographic Institute. His war documentary The Fighting Lady won the 1945 Academy Award for Best Documentary. After the war, Steichen served until 1962 as the Director of Photography at New York's Museum of Modern Art. Among other accomplishments, Steichen is appreciated for creating The Family of Man in 1955, a vast exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art consisting of over 500 photos that depicted life, love and death in 68 countries. Luxembourg artist Rom Lammar specializes in abstract paintings. "Although my creations are very intuitive and based on great spontaneity, I never forget the basic principles of a good abstract composition: right space division, unity, fineness of form, and a certain degree of mystery. In many ways, my paintings could be considered as inner landscapes." Rom Lammar's love of traveling (he made a round-the-world trip in 1992-1994), combined to his interest in primitive cultures, have led the artist on a quest for the unusual and an increasing use of non-traditional elements in his work, such as sand, wood, rusted metal pieces, rope, and small stones. Rom Lammar's recent paintings are influenced by sculptural forms and texture. The magic of his compositions is based on the way he uses depth, light, and shadow, to set the overall mood of the painting.

In his mostly large-scale paintings and installations, Michel Majerus sampled the imagery of the various areas of life and social groups. Kraftwerk, Super Mario, Toy Story, Space Invaders, 70s Pop Art, Tron, The Simpsons, Jack in the Box -- everything had a place in the imagery of Michel Majerus. He made use of artistic styles and artists like Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat or Gerhard Richter in the same way he used company logos, cartoon or computer game characters, or motives from advertising. What he absorbed, he processed and combined, and put it out again in his paintings. The Ukrainian National Museum invites you to the opening of "Paintings by Volodymyr Voroniuk" on Friday, February 3, 2012 at 7 pm. Voroniuk, an accomplished Ukrainian artist from the Bukovyna region of Ukraine, brings spring's beauty to life with his vivid images and colorful floral scenes and landscapes. A graduate of the Vyzhnyckiy College of Applied Art and the Odessa State Pedagogical Institute, Voroniuk is one of the most accomplished artists from the Bukovyna. In 1991 the artist began to exhibit his work internationally. A winner of several international art competitions, including first prize for his art work at the Lelingen-2000 Art Festival in Luxembourg, he has traveled extensively throughout Europe and the world with his art. Volodymyr Voroniuk is a member of the National Society of Artists in Ukraine. The artist boldly reveals his impressions of life in a colorful spectrum. His works evoke memories of Ukrainian folkloric characters. Showcased landscapes show the artists love of the original beauty of the Carpathians. His creative presence diversifies contemporary Ukrainian art giving it a language that is understood worldwide. Art enthusiasts will be able to meet Voroniuk at the exhibit opening. Adolf Schreyer (1828-1899), German painter, was born at Frankfurt-am-Main. He studied art first at the Städel Institute in his native town, and then at Stuttgart and Munich. He painted many of his favourite subjects in his travels in the East. He first accompanied Prince Thurn and Taxis through Hungary, Wallachia, Russia and Turkey; then, in 1854, he followed the Austrian army across the Wallachian frontier. In 1856 he went to Egypt and Syria, and in 1861 to Algiers. In 1862 he settled in Paris, but returned to Germany in 1870; and settled at Cronberg near Frankfurt, where he died. Schreyer was, and is still, especially esteemed as a painter of horses, of peasant life in Wallachia and Moldavia, and of battle incidents. His work is remarkable for its excellent equine draughtsmanship, and for the artist's power of observation and forceful statement; and has found particular favour among French and American collectors. Of his battle-pictures there are two at the Schwerin Gallery, and others in the collection of Count Mensdorff-Pouilly and in the Raven Gallery, Berlin. His painting of a Charge of Artillery of Imperial Guard was formerly at the Luxembourg Museum. The Metropolitan Museum, New York owns three of Schreyer's oriental paintings: Abandoned, Arabs on the March and Arabs making a detour; and many of his best pictures are in the Rockefeller family, Vanderbilt family, John Jacob Astor, William Backhouse Astor, Sr., August Belmont, and William Walters collections.
