| | Artist's Talk: John Stezaker (Part 1) Duration : 556 Seconds JOHN STEZAKER 18/06/2011 - 11/09/2011 @ Mudam Luxembourg - Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean The works that the British artist John Stezaker has been creating since the mid-1970s make use of film stills and portraits of actors found in secondhand bookshops, pictures taken from vintage books and old postcards. At their root lies the fascination that the found image can wield, thus reversing the usual hierarchy between artist and artwork. "Images find me rather than the other way round", as John Stezaker is fond of repeating. Like his Mask series, in which postcards depicting landscapes, grottoes and waterfalls cover, mask-like, the faces of film actors, his collages and image fragments are hallmarked by minimal modes of intervention: cropping, inversion, superposition, juxtaposition... Because the images used by John Stezaker refer to a recent but nonetheless bygone period, they apply the poetic and revelatory powers that the Surrealists saw in "outmoded" objects. "I'm interested by the obsolescence of images, the point where they become illegible and mysterious, when they touch another world", John Stezaker explains. His works propose an arrest of, or a delay in, the flow of images that characterises the contemporary world, making images that were obscured behind their uses and functions suddenly visible. John Stezaker's works may, in several respects, be part of the continuity of the collage activities that marked 20th-century art, but they stand out in particular by ... | | Mobistar Antarctic ICE Inspire Explore Connect - Expedition 2011-2012 Duration : 167 Seconds Belgian polar explorers Dixie Dansercoer and Sam Deltour will establish in 2011 a world distance record for a unique non-motorised and unsupplied expedition in Antarctica. Exactly 100 years after Roald Amundsen reached the South Pole for the first time, two Belgian explorers - one very experienced, the other young and promising - will attempt to bridge a distance of 6000 km between November 2011 and February 2012 in a 100% autonomous and ecologically friendly manner in an area of Antarctica where man has yet to set foot. Dixie and Sam will make optimal use of wind energy with a new type of kite and specially designed sledges. In doing so, they will not emit CO2, which is perfectly consistent with the ambition of Mobistar to halve its carbon footprint by 2020. Partner is Mobistar, one of the main actors in the world of telecommunications in Belgium and Luxembourg. | | De Gehangenen | LOD | Josse de Pauw & Jan Kuijken | in coproduction with VocaalLAB Duration : 149 Seconds The hanged are the people who asked questions out loud, who proclaimed their findings aloud, who did not simply want to submit to what was already known or what was written. They demanded the freedom to doubt and to inquire. They often had to pay for their curiosity with their lives. The musicians of the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie perform the music of Jan Kuijken. A musical story in which actors, singers and Jan himself, with his cello and recorded material, all find a place. Three singers and two actors dangle, hanged above the string ensemble. Première : 30 April 2011, KVS, Brussels Josse De Pauw wrote their lines. For the singers they were translated into Latin, so thet their narrative is sometimes reminiscent of a mass, perhaps a requiem, but it equally reminds us that Latin was the first universal language of science. The actors perform in Dutch; they are a man and a woman, two researchers who spoke too soon and too loud. The production is meant as an ode to free thinking and the frank expression of these thoughts. | | CTRL Variations Duration : 283 Seconds CTRL Variations A transdisciplinary Project by Pascal Schumacher, Ian Monk, Mich Welfringer and United Instruments of Lucilin. Premiered at Rainy Days Festival, december 5th 2009 at Philharmonie Luxembourg promotional video teaser directed by Jean Huot synopsis Is it a love story? No doubt. A piece about the strange relationship between people and their computers? That, too. (It contains, among other things, quite a few irritating spams refreshingly sandwiched into music.) Is it experimental literature? Of course, or at least in part, given that one of the participants is a member of the Oulipo group, which included Raymond Queneau and Georges Perec. Is it the sound track to an abstract film, in which the actors have been replaced by letters? Yes, in a way (hasnt Pascal Schumacher said its always more cool to write music for films than any other type?) When the jazz musician and composer Pascal Schmucher, the typographer Michel Welfringer and the writer Ian Monk join up to create for the United Instruments of Lucilin their CTRL Variations (Control? The control key? The notes C, T, R and L? Or the letters?) they open up the way to a highly controlled loss of control, in a composition for flute, clarinette, string trio, piano, percussion, loudspeakers and three video screens, putting into tight correlation music, text, graphic conception and, yes, several computers (CTRL+ALT+DELETE). | | META...a performance about the end of the world Duration : 112 Seconds The performance's main theme is the meaning of the "end" - the relation of people to society in a moment of disaster/crisis and the period after. It is a site-specific performance that incorporates theatre, dance, music and visual arts. As part of our research in order to collect the necessary material to cover the wide range of themes and extensions in this historic moment, we held a first round of meetings between the ODC group and our fellow citizens who, through their personal perspective and scientific knowledge, shared in an open discussion their own AFTER. Their specific relationship with the concept of destruction, since the crisis after the end of the world, after capitalism and after countless other AFTER-today. These open discussions lasted one month and planted the seeds for the show that we propose be subsidised. From this, we opened to the public a work-in-progress show entitled "META", which lasted 8 days (4-11 July 2011) and brought together many volunteers including some of the citizens who had taken part in the initial round of discussions. We presented "META" in an old tannery situated in the isolated area of Botanical, exactly where the open discussions had taken place. "META" emerged through the creation of a network society, through an open dialogue on the role of art today and the need for parallel clusters. We mobilised aound a common feeling: something is breaking in our society, something is getting irretrievably lost, and something is being ...
