jamesjosephbrown.com My mom's first language was Lithuanian. Though she is ashamed to admit that she has forgotten most of it, she is still very proud of her Lithuanian heritage. She often wears amber jewelry as a symbol of her Lithuanian roots, so while I am in Vilnius I decide to find her something special. Amber is is an iconic element of Lithuanian culture. It is a precious stone found on the shores of the Baltic Sea that features heavily in Lithuanian mythology, particularly in the folk tale of Jurate and Kestytis. Here I am shopping in Gintraka, an upscale shop on Pilies Gatve. The lovely Alisa Boriskina has selected several items she thinks my mom might like and now it is time for me to decide. Dina Popova, another employee of Gintraka, is operating the camera, but the girls are both so beautiful I can't resist featuring them both in this episode.

I could not have asked for a more exciting event. The people of Vilnius come out in full force to support the arts during the Tebunie Naktis (Let There Be Night) festival.

Twenty years ago the idea of Lithuania breaking free from the massive military might of the Soviet Union and once again emerging as an independent nation seemed like nothing more than the fanciful dream a handful a radical intellectuals and dissidents. As i take us on a tour through Cathedral Square in Vilnius, to the spot where miracles come true, I wish for more and more to materialize. There is no end to the good that we can achieve in this world if we keep our minds and our hearts open. It seemed impossible here twenty years ago, and yet here we are with one of the most interesting, dynamic, miraculous success stories in the modern world, an independent Lithuania. It gives me hope for other oppressed and struggling areas in the region, such as Belarus and Kaliningrad (formerly Prussia, another Baltic culture, like Latvia and Lithuania). I continue to believe in miracles.

jamesjosephbrown.com Lithuania has some of the most intriguing handicrafts in all of Europe, and beautiful souvenirs can be had for a fraction of the the price of comparable items in Prague, Budapest, or Warsaw. Here I take a stroll along Pilies Gatve and admire some of the artwork, jewelry, woodcarvings and leather goods on display. I end at the stall of Jonas, the kind man who in the past has sold me an armful of amber souvenirs that I plan to give as gifts when I return to the States.

jamesjosephbrown.com Pilies Gatve, one of the main tourist streets in Old Town Vilnius, attracts many talented local musicians who come to practice the timeless art of busking. Part of what gives this part of the city its charm and flavor is the eclectic mix of cellists, folk singers, and freakishly talented teens like Dmitri, who I often hear singing and strumming happily on his guitar from the balcony of my apartment on Pilies Gatve. I caught Dmitry in the middle of a spirited performance and decided I needed to capture it on film. Like moths to a flame, the passersby began to crowd around us, and after they had tossed their litai (Lithuanian coins) into his guitar case, I decided that I needed to follow up with an interview (see Episode 12).

jamesjosephbrown.com The power twins of the Vilnius music scene and their band explode their sound onto the street one rainy day like a Molotov cocktail. While rushing by, my friend and I look at each other from under our umbrellas like naughty kids asking to go play in the rain. Permission granted, we spend an hour at their free outdoor concert on Pilies Gatve, where an enthusiastic crowd ignores the rain and dances to their infectious mix of rock, funk and post-punk, tongue-in-cheek lyrics in Lithuanian, English, and Russian. They don't have any change for my twenty litas note, so I take it as a happy accident and instead of buying just one of their CDs I buy two and give one to my friend in a not so random act of kindness. There really are no accidents, especially in a city like Vilnius, where these magical moments weave into the fabric of day to day life. Google them or go to Facebook and search for 'Timohi' to find them. Most of the enterprising members of Timothi each have their own individual web presences as well.
