www.marlamervis.com I took a trip to Lithuania to search for relatives in the Israel Mervis Family Tree. Although I didn't meet any Mervis', I was able to check out the village of Baisogala where the Mervis' lived. One thing I learned was to search for multiple spellings of your name, The various spellings are Merves, Mervis, Mirvis, Mirvisch, Mirvish, Mirviss, Mirvitz, Mirwis, Mirwish,Mirwitch, and others. I met beautiful Lithunanians during my trip. All very eager to help, although I only found 1 woman that spoke English. This was a very special and heartfelt journey inspired by my Pappy Iz, who I love very much!

St. Casimir Cathedral is a beautiful baroque sanctuary in the town of Vilnius, Lithuania. Construction started on the cathedral in 1604 and it was officially consecrated in 1635 when Roman Catholicism was dominant in Vilnius. Between 1963 and 1988, the church experienced a phase of irreligion in which it was transformed into an atheist museum. The stunning 40 meter cupola atop this cathedral features the architectural gold embellished crown of the Duke of Lithuania. In 1988, the town of Vilnius decided to identify the church as a Catholic sanctuary once again. St. Casimir Cathedral is now a site of pilgrimage as well as a magnificent destination.

At the center of the gorgeous town of Kaunas, Lithuania is a magnificent domed cathedral. St. Michael the Archangel Church, built in the 1890s, stands majestically as a Neo-Byzantine style catholic sanctuary. Though it currently functions as Roman Catholic, it was initially built as a Russian Orthodox Church for soldiers stationed at Kaunas Fortress. The cupolas atop the building were constructed as vantage points for military troops defending the city. When the Soviet Union took control of Kaunas, the church was used as an art gallery due to the significance of its architectural design. Visitors can tour the cathedral's treasures, such as the balanced crosses, elaborate stained glass windows, ornate altar, and catacombs.

LTV travel projects Expedition with old Mercedes cars was organized from Vilnius to Bamako, the capital of Mali, in the beginning of 2007. It took exactly one month to drive approximately 12 thousand kilometers. Project called "Afrika.Lt" was shot, and a four-part documentary series was broadcasted prime-time on "Lithuanian television" (LTV) every Wednesday night, following the daily news broadcast "Panorama" in June 2007. Ratings: average 6% of all TV audience, ie -- more than 200 thousand viewers nightly. It was the most viewed Wednesday's program of LTV for four weeks in a row. In 2008, after traveling to Western Africa, Martynas Starkus (TV producer), Vytaras Radzevičius (journalist) and Jonas Juozapaitis (TV director) have prepared themselves for a new adventure - to overcome a ten-thousand kilometer route Vilnius -- Teheran - Tashkent. The trip on the large part ran on the legendary Silk Road and the expedition was given this name. The travelers drove three Mercedes 123 cars (made in 1979, 1982 and 1984) on the roads of Poland, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. At the end of the expedition the cars were sold in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, and the earnings were given as a present to a small Lithuanian community based there. Five parts of this documentary series were broadcasted on LTV in the summer of 2008 and scored a great success. Until the Olympics in Beijing, it was the most popular project of LTV.
