In XIV c. on the top of Birute hill astronomical observations were carried out. The replica of this paleoastronomic observatory was constructed north of Sventoji settlement, not far from Health centre "Energetikas", and called "Žemaičių alka" (Samogitian sanctuary). It was made by Palanga branch of Samogitians' culture organization. In June 1998 wooden columns made by folk artists were put up here. Each column corresponds to the names of mythological gods and goddesses of the Balts: Perkūnas (Thunder), Aušrinė (Morning star the Venus), Žemyna (Goddess of Earth Vitality), Austėja (Goddess of Bees), Ondenis (Water God), Patrimpas (God of plants and Spring), Patulas (Linger earth God), Velnias (God of Dead Souls), Leda (Mother of Gods) and heavenly bodies - Saulė (Sun) and Mėnulis (Moon). When the sun goes down to the sea by the help of these columns it is possible to fix calendar holidays, which come from old lithuanian religion. They are: Dew holiday, Stork's Day, Shrovetide, Christmas etc.

This has been overshadowed by the tragic events that occurred mainly during massive, persistent foreign occupations. While Lithuanian collaborators cannot be absolved of their participation in such atrocities as the Holocaust during World War II, there must also be a forum to discuss the contribution made by those people in Lithuania who risked their lives to fight for freedom, equality, and the right of religious expression. During a routine trip to Ausros Vartai (the Gates of Dawn), I feel inspired to finally open up about my own family's history, which is equal parts tragic and inspiring to me. My great aunt Vladislava risked her life to try to protect her Jewish friends and neighbors during the Nazi occupation of her village in rural Lithuania during World War II. She was unsuccessful, but I still feel inspired by her story of courage.

The Hill of Crosses is located near Siauliani and it is estimated that over 50000 crosses and rosaries stand on a small hill. The Germans and Russians bulldozed the site many times trying to stamp out religion but the crosses kept reappearing. Erected in memory of those exiled to Siberia, killed by the Russians and Nazis and those who died in the name of freedom in Poland and other countries.

Global Intervention Now To Save Tibetan Lives 2011 11 02 Vilnius Lietuva Brussels : The European Parliament on 27 October 2011 adopted a resolution on Tibet in which it expressed its deep concern on the recent self-immolations of eight Tibetan Buddhist monks and one nun in Ngaba, Tibet, and condemned the continued crackdown by Chinese authorities on Tibetan monasteries and sentencing of the Kirti monks without fair trial. In the resolution, the European Parliament urged the Chinese authorities to lift restrictions and heavy-handed security measures imposed on Kirti monastery and to be accountable for the status of the Tibetans who survived self-immolation and to provide complete details on the status of those detained after March 16, 2011, including the 300 monks forcibly taken from the monastery and proceed to their immediate release. It also urged the Chinese authorities to allow independent international media and human rights monitors to visit the area. The European Parliament called on the government of the People's Republic of China to respect rights of the Tibetans in all its provinces and to take proactive steps to resolve their underlying grievances.
