Grand Duke Vitort of Lithuania (Historical Variations: Vytautas, Vitort, Vitovt, Witold) and his cousin King Jogaila of Poland decisively defeated the Teutonic Knights, led by Grand Master Ulrich von Jungingen. Most of the Teutonic Knights' leadership were killed or taken prisoner. The battle was one of the largest battles in Medieval Europe and is regarded as the most important victory in the history of Poland and Lithuania. It was surrounded by romantic legends and nationalistic propaganda, becoming a larger symbol of struggle against invaders and a source of national pride. The Battle is also referred to as the Battle of Tannenberg. One the famous band's in Lithuania's history "Foje" performing the last time. The last concert was held in "Vingis" park, Vilnius, Lithuania, on 1997.05.17. That was the biggest concert in Lithuania's history. Attendance - over 60 000 people (record). "Foje" made the last tour in three cities - Klaipėda, Kaunas and Vilnius. Attendance during this tour was about 90 000 people. Between the weather, memorials to the victims of Russia and Germany with an eternal flame at one, memorials to others who died in the fight for freedom and the many derelict buildings that need to be resuscitated, Kaunas, Lithuania (and Latvia) was downright sobering. I can't even imagine living a lifetime of being occupied and repressed. Understandably, we noticed that the majority of people over 45 never smiled. What do they have to smile about after 51 years of seeing lives destroyed?
