Large numbers of Lithuanians are facing a cash crisis. Snoras Bank, one of the country's leading financial institutions, was seized by the government amid major fraud allegations. Elderly people were hardest-hit at first, since many of them don't have ATM cards. Instead, they're accustomed to cashing their pension checks at the counter. Now, even the automated teller machines are out of money. The owners of Snoras, Russian financier Vladimir Antonov and a Lithuanian partner, have been accused of using the bank's capital on business deals, including to buy Swedish carmaker Saab - a deal that fell through. Antonov has since been detained in London.

After bankruptcy of bank Snoras and corruption scandals related to it, Lithuanians tend to keep their money not in the banks, but in private safes. According to safes manufactures, sales rose by one third this year. Part of safes manufactures claim that that previously safes were mainly purchased by firms. However, at the moment trends are changing. More and more private persons are interested in obtaining their own safe. Moreover, customers tend to buy more expensive safes, the ones of better quality. Safe manufactures say that among the most popular things, that Lithuanians store in their safes are not only documents, jewels or guns, but cash as well. According to economists, Lithuanians tend to use five times more cash than Scandinavians. Analysts relate increased demand for safes with Snoras bankruptcy. Lithuanian Government have nationalized 100% of the bank shares on November 16, 2011. This was based on the public interest after concerns about financial bank's situation and possible non-transparent financial activities. Lithuanians courts deal with the bankruptcy case. 1. On January 23, 2011, the Dainava Lithuanian Chorale closed its concert in remembrance of those who died for Lithuania's freedom with the beloved song "Kur Bėga Šešupė" or "Where The Šešupė Flows." With lyrics written by Maironis and set to music by Česlovas Sasnauskas, this song invokes memories of the banks of the Šesupė River. "Here is our country, beautiful Lithuania ... through the countryside, Birutė's songs can be heard...O Lord above, watch over the land of our homestead, where our forefathers lie, for your fatherly love makes everything possible. We are forever your children." This concert, entitled "Aukos Dvasia" ("The Spirit of Sacrifice"), was held on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the killings of unarmed civilians by the Soviets at the Vilnius TV Tower on January 13th, 1991.
