This included trade and military cooperation ever since Turkey recognised Israel in 1948. The US largely encouraged the two countries' ties in the interest of fostering greater regional stability. But what Israel called 'Operation Cast Lead' in late 2008 pushed relations to breaking point. Israel's attack on Gaza, saying it was to stop rocket fire into Israel and prevent weapons from getting into the Hamas-governed strip, included a heavy Palestinian civilian death toll. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan unleashed a fury on Israeli President Shimon Peres at the Davos forum: "You have a very strong voice," he said. "I feel that you perhaps feel a bit guilty and that is why perhaps you have been so strong in your words, so loud. Well, you killed people." This public incident was the equivalent of a fist in the face in diplomatic terms. And more was to follow. Turkey's ambassador to Israel would be kept waiting like an errant student, summoned to explain what was considered an outrage by Israel in a Turkish TV drama portraying Mossad agents in a bad light. The ambassador was given a low seat to sit on, and was further humiliated by the absence in the interview room of the Turkish flag. Ankara took it badly. Toronto summers are highlighted by the myriad of street festivals that happen in different neighbourhoods and celebrate food, music and culture. Several times now I have had visitors in town at the end of July who I ended up taking to the annual Beaches International Jazz Festival. It's been a hit every time. It was no different this year. On July 24 and 25, 2009 I partook of the Beaches Jazz Fest and on the second day my 5 European guests joined me in the 3 km long street party. More then 50 bands had been lined up, dozens and dozens of food stalls and souvenir stands lined the street, and about a million people showed up to enjoy the music. The atmosphere was phenomenal, and my visitors were blown away by the huge selection of high-quality live music and the ambience. As always, I looked for some of my personal favourites: the Imbayakunas and Puente del Diablo entertained the crowed with Latin and Spanish rhythms. I stood in line for ½ hour to grab a front row spot to see talented master violinist Dr. Draw and his diabolically brilliant performance in front of a raptured crowd. Late at night, on my way eastwards to get home, I got drawn in by the alluring rhythms of the Rob Christian Band and its new lead singer (whose name I never got) who, with his improvised lyrics and catchy melody, got Torontonians swaying, tapping their feet and even jumping and clapping in utter exuberance. No doubt everybody had an awesome time.

However, it is likely that the number of mercenaries fighting for the besieged Libyan leader is quite small. It is unclear how many mercenaries Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has deployed against Libyan protesters, but African analysts such as Na'eem Jeenah, executive director of the Afro-Middle East Centre in Johannesburg, suggest the number is relatively low. "It is difficult to say exactly how many mercenaries are operating in Libya and how widespread it is, but I think it is safe to say that they number at least in the hundreds," said Jeenah. Jeenah and other analysts says Gadhafi has a long history of using mercenaries from Chad, Nigeria, Niger and perhaps even the Central African Republic in other conflicts outside of Libya.
