VPG-DVD-235 - Tripoli is the capital of the desert state of Libya. The old town is known as the Medina and with its narrow lanes and squat buildings it is a combination of Arabian, North African and Mediterranean cultures. The joie de vivre of the local people is obvious and music and dance are part of their daily life. In antiquity the city was called Oea that was one of the three cities of Tripolitania and in Roman times this section of the coast contained the trading towns of Leptis Magna and Sabratha. Since 1963 Tripoli has been the capital of the Great Socialist Libyan-Arab Peoples Republic. The old town contains a souk that was almost fully abandoned following the Great Revolution as private trading was then forbidden but when the law was abolished in 1988 it once again sprang to life. Modern Tripoli is undergoing constant development. Contemporary architecture is everywhere with skyscrapers that contain offices and apartments that have been built on the periphery of the city. Around seventy kilometres west of Tripoli and also located on the Mediterranean coast are the remains of the ancient trading town of Sabratha. Its Theatre has been rebuilt and is still an impressive structure that dates back to the second century AD Tripoli, along with the historic towns of the former Tripolitania, is one of the most spectacular places of ancient culture in North Africa and the heritage of an advanced civilisation located on the edge of the Sahara.

The foreign ministers of Libya and Switzerland met in Spain yesterday to seek an end to a diplomatic quarrel that is affecting relations with the European Union. Hosting the meeting in Madrid, Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos tried to sound optimistic about resolving the issue. [Miguel Angel Moratinos, Spanish Foreign Minister]: "The Libyan and Swiss authorities are going to find a solution to a problem that unfortunately has been running for a year and a half affecting the good relationship, good bilateral relationship between Switzerland and Libya. And that has affected the relationship at the councilor level in relation with the visas between the European Union and Libya." Moratinos says that big differences remain between the feuding countries. [Miguel Angel Moratinos, Spanish Foreign Minister]: "We've moved forward. And above all, as I said there is a will to find a solution. But I'm not going to hide the difficulty and the difficult situation for the Swiss and Libyan authorities." Spain holds the rotating presidency of the EU which was dragged into the dispute this week when Libya stopped issuing visas to most EU nationals. Libyas move aimed at retaliating against Switzerland for its travel ban on Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, his family and other Libyans. Ahmed Fakroun Singer songwriter Hailing from Benghazi, Libya, Ahmed Fakrun is widely considered the foremost pioneer of modern Arabic World Music. He has collaborated with numerous talented international producers throughout his career - including Papathanassiou Vangelis, Nicholas Nicorelli, Tommy Vance, Group Enod, Jean Ferre and Mark Harris - and recorded for world-class labels. An early childhood fascination with rhythmic harmony led to his choice, as first instrument, of the Fender Precision Electric Bass. This was soon flanked by harmonica, guitar and piano, as well as traditional stringed instruments such as the ud, the mandola and the saz. From the very beginning, he listened intently to music from every corner of the planet - from the Libyan desert and the temples of India to the Scottish highlands and streets of New York - absorbing a rich variety of influences that would lead to his unique, personal style...
