Independent journalist Lizzie Phelan who has been covering the Libyan crisis since it began speaks to Hamid Dorda, the son of Dr Abuzed Dorda. Once Libyan Prime Minister, Permanent Representative to the UN and head of intelligence, Dr Abuzed Dorda's life is now in grave danger. In contravention of international law and with human rights organisations and the UN itself turning a blind eye, Dr Dorda has suffered torture, inhumane and severe mistreatment and numerous attempts on his life since NTC forces detained him on September 11. His health is deteriorating and he remains untreated since October 25 for internal bleeding and broken bones. His family are being refused the right to visit him. Dr Dorda enjoyed a large base of popular support, being seen as one of the least incorruptible figures in libyan politics and society. If he is assassinated or left to die from his injuries, it will be a considerable blow for the already bleak prospects of a stable and just political future in Libya. .... Who needs diplomacy, or international law? Not former presidential candidate (R-AZ) John McCain, who became the first senator to publicly call for a US-led military strike on Syria in order to halt the nearly year-long conflict there. Taking the Senate floor, McCain said there will be no UN mandate for the air strikes he deems the only way to stop the violence -- but that a mandate isn't necessary. But as Libya celebrates a new era free of the Gaddafi regime, there are growing concerns the country's lingering divisions will tear it apart. Libya remains deeply splintered by regions and factions. More than 500 militias exist throughout the country, leading to ongoing human rights abuses that resemble those under the Gaddafi regime. We speak to Trinity College Professor Vijay Prashad. "There is a serious need to evaluate what has happened in Libya as a result, not only of the Gaddafi atrocities of the rise of the rebellion, but also significantly of the nature of the NATO intervention. And that evaluation has not happened," Prashad said. "I'm afraid that is really calling into question the use of human rights as a lubricant for intervention. If we can't go back and evaluate what has happened, I think a lot of people around the world are afraid of going forward into another intervention where the lessons of Libya have not been learned." DemocracyNow.org - Libyan rebels have consolidated their grip on the capital of Tripoli by capturing Col. Muammar Gaddafi's main compound, but the whereabouts of the Libyan leader remain unknown and he has vowed his forces would resist "the aggression with all strength" until either victory or death. Reporters in Tripoli say heavy gunfire could still be heard nearby the area of the Rixos hotel where dozens of international journalists guarded by heavily armed Gaddafi loyalists are unable to leave. The Arab league said on Tuesday it will meet this week to consider giving Libyan rebels the country's seat at the league, after it was taken away a few months ago from the Gaddafi government. Today Britain's National Security Council is meeting to to discuss unfreezing Libyan assets to financially assist the National Transitional Council.
