| | "Libya" - poem by Patti Smith, 7/8/93, aka Cela S'appele L'Aurore (It is the Dawn) Duration : 250 Seconds A poem on a hot night read by Patti Smith at a free Central Park Summerstage spoken word performance, July 8th 1993. Patti states the poem was written on or shortly after April 15th, 1986, a day in which both French writer/poet/playwright Jean Genet and Hana Qaddafi (Libyan dictator's Muammer Qaddafi's 15-month-old granddaughter) died, Hana perishing in a US bombing raid. It is dawn I wonder where I am ah yes nothing but here for fair foolish I caroused within my own four walls imbibing grace a blood claret refusing to stain the red carpet on which I sit cross-legged cross armed with paper and quill and Coltrane it was a crazy night though I did not celebrate I was mourning crazy as a stranger mourns the desert rain its brevity the unexpected thrill the red dust whorl We have bombed Libya. We chose a swaggering vicious romantic lying on his cot playing Beethoven playing Alexander playing a dangerous game and perhaps we chose well I don't know but it is dawn a dazed warhead struck and he lies alive his eyes white with weeping we have chosen well we have bombed the compound of a little girl a tiny bud bearing his name Hana Qaddafi swaddling enemy whose tiny girl cries are forever stilled and to what purpose written if not the gold leaf of surrender for God's arms are open for a little one like her But it is dawn. can it matter? and many things have happened in the rich chorus of night here, clustered among notes a high sigh of a waif someone else has ... | | Arabic Spring Poetry Readings (1) Duration : 541 Seconds The Arabic Program at Williams held an evening "Celebrating Arabic Spring" on November 3, 2011. The event started by socializing with the guests over delicious Arabic refreshments and sweets. Professors Vargas and Khattab then introduced Arabic Spring, an occasion to celebrate with poetry originating in the uprisings in Egypt, Libya, and other countries in the Middle East. Students from all levels of Arabic study recited a selection of revolutionary poems and songs and native speakers, Mustafa M., Fulbright TA from Libya, and Omer, international student from Jordan, recited poems by Libyan Abdurrahman Alashmaw and Egyptian Mahmoud Darwish. The evening ended on a high note with a rap song in English titled "Libya Bleed" performed by two 101 students.
