The Painter Sisters
Duration : 137 Seconds

BENGHAZI, LIBYA 5/30/2011 -- Since the uprising began in March of this year, artists in Libya have begun to flourish after decades of suppression at the hands of the state. "It's an explosion of the arts," says Farida Elasbli, one of the artists displaying her paintings at a recent art show in Benghazi. Farida and her sister Fatin have taken to painting with a revolutionary theme, with one of their more popular pieces depicting revolutionary icon Eman Obeidi. Surrounded by weapons and images of political prisoners, she displays the bruises from her assault as she famously did for journalists after breaking through Gaddafi's security at the Rixos Hotel. Another shows a young man, his back turned, praying in a mosque. "This is my favorite piece," says Osama Manaa, a visitor to the art gallery. Another visitor, Salheen Naihoum, says is he quite impressed with the paintings, particularly after spending time discussing the pieces with the artists themselves. Fatin says that since the beginning of the revolution, many young people have been eager to see the art exhibitions popping up all over Benghazi, "like a blindfold was lifted off their eyes." Alive in Libya attended a gallery showing by Fatin and Farida and spoke with them, and their admirers, about their work, as well as the burgeoning art scene in post-revolution Benghazi.

IMAZIGHEN LIBYA ♫ عبدالله عشيني ♫ Oric Bates, The Eastern Libyans: www.archive.org + en.wikipedia.org also nelc.uchicago.edu Berbers Imazighen are the indigenous people of North Africa, west of the Nile Valley since 10000 years. They are discontinuously distributed from the Atlantic Ocean to the Siwa oasis, in Egypt, and from the Mediterranean Sea to the Niger River. Historically they spoke various Berber languages, which together form a branch of the Afro-Asiatic language family. The unified conventional berber language is called "Tamazight," and is written using the "Tifinagh" alphabet. Berbers call themselves Imazighen (singular: Amazigh), meaning "free people" or "free and noble men." The best known of the ancient Berbers were the Numidian king Masinissa, and his son Jughurta, the Roman author Apuleius, Saint Augustine of Hippo. Famous Berbers of the Middle Ages included Tariq ibn Ziyad, a general who conquered Spain and Andalousia, Abbas Ibn Firnas, a prolific inventor and early pioneer in aviation; Ibn Battuta, a medieval explorer who traveled the longest known distances in pre-modern times; and Estevanico, an early explorer of the Americas. The name "Berber" appeared for the first time after the end of the Roman Empire. The use of the term Berber spread in the period following the arrival of the Vandals during their major invasions. The history of a Roman consul in Africa made reference for the first time to the term "barbarian" to describe Numidia. Muslim ...

Tadrart Acacus, UNESCO World Heritage Site
Duration : 91 Seconds

Tadrart Acacus is a desert area in westernLibya and is part of the Sahara. It is situated close to the Libyan city of Ghat. Tadrart means 'mountain' in the native language of the area (Tamahaq language). It has a particularly rich array of prehistoric rock art. The Acacus has a large variation of landscapes, from differently coloured sand dunes to arches, gorges, rocks and mountains. Major landmarks are the arches of Afzejare and Tin Khlega. Although this area is one of the most arid of the Sahara, there is vegetation, such as the callotropis plant. The area is known for its rock-art and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 because of the importance of these paintings and carvings. The paintings date from 12000 BC to 100 AD and reflect cultural and natural changes in the area. There are paintings and carvings of animals such as giraffes, elephants, ostriches and camels, but also of men and horses. Men are depicted in various daily life situations, for example while making music and dancing.

AKAKUS Libya
Duration : 593 Seconds

Acacus is an enchanting world of sand and stone, a fairy-tale like natural area in the south west of Libya. Although the journey can be quite demanding, it is well worthwhile as it leads into a little known world that is full of remarkable beauty. The Guelta Taschunt is a wadi that is known for a very narrow canyon that can only be entered on foot. Today, the mighty rocks and endless desert landscape form a natural border between Libya and neighboring Algeria. Today, around 1300 members of the Tuareg, a nomadic Berber tribe, inhabit this region and it was here in 1850 that a German archaeologist discovered prehistoric remains, as well as rock paintings, proof of an ancient culture. The desert mountains of Acacus are far more than just a fascinating landscape. The rocks in its dried out river valleys are like a historic picture book that provides us with a remarkable insight into what was once a magnificent Saharan culture.

Libya Commentary 4: Al Bayda, Out of the Ashes
Duration : 267 Seconds

In his fourth installment, filmmaker Matthew Millan travels to the city of Al Bayda with Libya al-Hurra news channel to see the artistic explosion occurring in the Libyan hinterland. Once again, on 120 mile drive, he saw the remnants of a half-built infrastructure, the skeletons of a lost civilization. Yet in provincial towns such as Al Bayda, he witnessed an explosive burgeoning of the arts, in the form of music, poetry and paintings. For too long, the residents of Bayda have been silent. They have been accused by Gaddafi and the West of being the epicenter of Islamist extremism without getting the opportunity to express themselves. But the events in February forever changed this, and everybody is itching to have their voice heard. In fact, Millan got caught in the middle of a stampeded when Libya al-Hurra began interviewing residents of Al Bayda.

LIBYA
Duration : 3113 Seconds

Libya is one of the most interesting desert countries and it is gradually opening its doors to the outside world. It is a veritable treasure trove of history. Ancient art and culture of various epochs, as well as the fascinating exotic flair of the Orient, make Libya a wonderful and fascinating holiday destination. The capital, Tripoli, awakes early in the morning as fishermen return from their nocturnal work at sea along with their catch, which is fresh and tasty and ready for market. In antiquity, Tripoli was called Oea and was one of the three cities of Tripolitania. Seventy kilometres west of Tripoli and also located on the Mediterranean coast are the remains of the ancient trading town of Sabratha. Its Theatre has been rebuilt and is an impressive structure that dates back to the second century AD It was originally built by the Romans who came here after the Phoenicians and gave the city a completely new appearance. It could accommodate up to five thousand onlookers. Just like the country's former explorers, we venture further and further into the desert and spend the night in Kirkiba Camp, in circular straw huts at the foot of huge sand dunes. Next day we visit Garma, now in ruins, but which around two thousand years ago, was the capital of the Garamantes Realm. From the Sahara we travel to the country's eastern Mediterranean coast and to ancient Cyrenaika, the largest city in today's Benghazi. Of the historic city of the Pentapolis, the Greek five-city alliance ...

Painting of the Day #1 May 10, 2012
Duration : 326 Seconds

I had one of my paintings in the public area of the hallway in my apartment building...the fire department made me move it and gave me an official warning letter. I plan to sell, give away and destroy all my artwork that I have created in the past 10 years in Hong Kong. If I destroy it, I will document that on video and make the destruction be my new art project! Sounds like real fun to me! Thanks for watching...I will post the Painting of the Day #2 tomorrow...^ ^

19. Baroque Extravaganzas: Rock Tombs, Fountains, and Sanctuaries in Jordan, Lebanon, and Libya
Duration : 4375 Seconds

Roman Architecture (HSAR 252) Professor Kleiner features the baroque phenomenon in Roman architecture, in which the traditional vocabulary of architecture, consisting of columns and other conventional architectural elements, is manipulated to enliven building façades and inject them with dynamic motion. This baroque trend is often conspicuously ornamental and began to be deployed on the walls of forums and tombs in Italy already in the late first century AD But baroque architecture in Roman antiquity was foremost in the Greek East where high-quality marble and expert marble carvers made it the architectural mode of choice. At Petra in Jordan, tomb chambers were cut into cliffs and elaborate façades carved out of the living rock. The cities of Miletus and Ephesus in Asia Minor were adorned with gates and fountains and libraries and stage buildings that consisted of multi-storied columnar screens. The lecture culminates with the Sanctuary of Jupiter Heliopolitanus, a massive temple complex at Baalbek in Lebanon, with Temples of Jupiter and Bacchus in enormous scale and with extreme embellishment, and the Temple of Venus with an undulating lintel that foreshadows the curvilinear flourishes of Francesco Borromini's S. Carlo alle Quattro Fontane in seventeenth-century Rome. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Baroque Architecture in the Roman Empire 11:51 - Chapter 2. Exploring Baroque Elements in Italy 23:41 - Chapter 3. Baroque Facadism at Petra 41:39 - Chapter 4. The Baroque in Ancient Asia ...
