$8.00 PER GALLON? 1979 REPEAT? The current spike in gas prices is not due to a tight supply and demand situation. I think this has become a news driven market - I think the price jump is due to them betting on the situation in the middle east & Libya is going to get worse before it gets better and thats whats driving crude at a time of year when we don't normally see this type of price jump. Funny thing is, We don't directly buy Iranian or Libyan oil so if they go offline, It should not affect us right? unless there is greater competition for the oil that is still out there. So why these spikes at the punp? Saudi Arabia said just yesterday that they will step in and fill any shortages. In my opinion, These prices are just speculative. With that said however, Pricing in Libya supply disruptions is one thing, but what if this social unrest spreads to Saudi Arabia, which holds 20 percent of the world's oil?" When you do the math: we'd be talking about $200 or $300 oil. that equates to $8-$10/gal at the pump. You know, there is more oil under the United States than there is in all of Saudi Arabia, So why don't we just tap into that and not rely on forign oil? Well, Unfortunatly it's not that easy, The oil is Shale, it needs to go through a special extraction and refinement process, it doesn't become economically viable until Gas reaches around $7.00 a Gallon (which may be sooner than later sadly) - Oh and by the way, We dont even have a way to refine it - Thanks tree huger's ...
