Once called the Pearl of the Sahara, Libya's centuries-old heritage site, Ghadamis, has been devoid of tourists since the uprising against Muammar Gaddafi began last year. Residents say the instability created after the downfall of the Gaddafi regime has dealt a heavy blow to the city's tourist-reliant economy. Al Jazeera's Omar al-Saleh reports from Ghadamis.

EUROPEAN HERITAGE LIBRARY WWW.EUROHERITAGE.NET Roughly half of Libya was superficially annexed from the collapsing Ottoman empire by the growing Italian colonial empire in 1910. Its tribes resisted fiercly, and Italy was unable to secure a full colony much like it was humiliated in Ethiopia. The strongman Mussolini sought to prove Italian Roman majesty, and initiated a full-scale conquest of the Libyan tribes. Islamic Mujahidin fought a Jihad against the Italian colonialists for the establishment of an independent Muslim Libya (under the Wahhabi/Salafist Sanussis, still influential today). Islamic assaults on Italian civilian settlers and soldiers were met with brutal scorched-earth attacks. The rebellion was led by Umar Mukhtar. The uprising was unsuccessful, but became a heroic model for Muslims across the world. Libya was the first nation in North Africa to break from colonial rule. The Libyan revolution -- like the later Islamic revolution of Mumar Qadafi -- was under the banner of Islam, heavily influenced by Wahhabism and "Sanussism". The copyright of this film is expired. The uprising in Libya has shaken Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's hold on the country. One community that up until now had been too afraid to showcase its cultural heritage is benefiting from greater cultural freedoms in rebel-held areas. Al Jazeera's James Bays has been spending time with the ancient Berber people and filed this report.

Leptis Magna (in Inschriften auch Lepcis Magna, heute Lebda / ‏لبدة‎ / Labda) war eine antike Stadt in Libyen und eine der drei Städte der Landschaft Tripolitanien in der Provinz Africa. Die beiden Varianten Leptis und Lepcis lassen sich vermutlich mit unterschiedlichen Transkriptionen des ursprünglich punischen Namens ins Lateinische erklären. UNESCO-Direktorin ruft dazu auf, "alles zu tun, um das unschätzbare Kulturerbe Libyens zu schützen "Leptis Magna (in inscriptions also Leptis Magna, now Lebda / لبدة / Labda) was an ancient city in Libya and one of the three cities of Tripolitania landscape in the province of Africa. The two variants can be Leptis Leptis and probably with different transcriptions of the original Punic name declare into Latin. UNESCO Director calls for "doing everything possible to protect the priceless heritage of Libya"
