Leslie Lumeh's life was turned upside down after he was forced to flee his home in 1997 at the height of Liberia's brutal civil war. His paintings depicting the atrocities of the conflict had made him unpopular with the regime of president Charles Taylor. It was to be eight long years before Leslie was able to return home in 2005 and fulfill his dream to give local artists an opportunity to promote their works. The opening of the country's first post-war art gallery is a sure sign that Liberia is well on its way to healing old wounds.

UNMIL in partnership with the Liberian Government, UNICEF, and the Union of Liberian Artists has hosted a painting and drawing competition for Adolescents and Women. The project culminated in a finale event held at the University of Liberia auditorium in Monrovia on Friday, July 15, 2011. In all there were 247 submissions of artwork from 12 counties including Bomi, Grand Gedeh, Maryland, Grand Bassa, Bong, Montserrado, Grand Kru, Margibi, Nimba, Lofa, and Grand Cape Mount. Artwork of the finalists who participated in the competition was displayed at the finale event at the University of Liberia. In the finale event 20 contestants competed for first, second, and third place. A panel of four jurors--one from the Union of Liberian Artists, one from UN Women, and one each from UNMIL Gender and Human Rights section--chose the winners. The First Place Winner was Paul Zonweay, the Second Place Winner was Georah Zorbah (she also won Best Female Artist), and the Third Place Winner was Ervin Clinton, Jr. Three other Special Categories were created with the winners including Best Adolescent Female Artist, Angelique Murphy, age 12 years; Best Adolescent Male Artist, Wilson Fallah, Age 18; and Best Female Artist, Georah, Zorbah.

In March 2010, the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience aided Liberia's Civic Initiative, the Liberia Media Center, and other Liberian civil society organizations in their efforts to implement a key recommendation of the recently concluded Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC): to memorialize the country's past conflicts. The workshop was intended to help Liberians create a public record based on the personal stories of the past reflective of the suffering Liberia had experienced during two civil wars from 1989 to 2003. Everyday Liberians, including amputees from the war, wives of soldiers, and others, participated in the workshops to develop their own artwork: through dialogue about their experiences, they created drawings, paintings, and "body maps" -- life-size images of human bodies -- to express their memories. WITNESS -- REMEMBER -- CREATE became an international effort using recollections and art to build a public memory of Liberia's civil wars. www.sitesofconscience.org

Website: www.telusplanet.net From nursing to art This exhibition is being held 60 years after I went into the nursing program at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta I always loved to paint and draw and I always wanted to be a nurse. In my journey through life I have been able to do both. I approached a friend to ask her if she would represent me in Edmonton. When she agreed I consigned some paintings to her. Is it not strange that her quest for a venue to show the paintings would lead her to the Glenrose Hospital? It was not until later that she found out that the Glenrose was the actual site where I trained to be a nurse (old building was torn down after the Glenrose was built behind it ) I am very pleased that a portion of the proceeds from sales will go to the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital. The selection of paintings covers some (but not all) of the different "periods" of my "painting career" I hope you enjoy my on line presentation. Biography & Artist Statement My interest in painting & drawing started as a young child. I cannot remember a time when I did not draw. My first paintings were landscapes. Bonnie MacAllister with Victor Thompson: Bonnie MacAllister renders moments in multimedia: documentary photography, abstract paintings, film, and performance. Her writing has been published by Paper Tiger Media (Brisbane), nth Position (UK), Grasp(Czech Republic), and Dead Drunk Dublin (Ireland). Recent stagings of her plays were at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, the Shubin Theatre, and the Adrienne Theatre. She has performed at NYFA and the Cat Cat Club in Paris. She has recently shown her visual artwork at the Delaware Art Museum, Galeria 6 (Mexico), the Center for Green Urbanism (DC), University of Pennsylvania, Montclair State University (NJ), and Florissant Valley Art Gallery in St. Louis, MO. She lives in West Philadelphia. Victor Thompson has written plays, made movies, performed original poetry, created found sculpture, and developed pictures on the electron microscope. He studied in Avignon in 1978, and he taught science as a Peace Corps volunteer in Liberia in 1981. He now works in the gross anatomy lab of a medical school.
