World Bank Group President Robert Zoellick is calling on leaders of the world's richest countries and major oil producers to act now on surging food and oil prices. Zoellick says the world is entering "a danger zone," and about 10 billion US dollars are needed to meet the short term needs of the places and people hit hardest. Liberia is one of those...rising food prices have pushed 200 thousand people into poverty there.

These are the resulting documentaries from the DocU Project, a collaboration between the Arts Centre and Torquay College, North Geelong Secondary College, Geelong English Language School, Smeaton Primary School and Norlane High School, supported by DEECD. The Arts Centre Outreach Partnerships Program in Multimedia & Community Learning (or DocU Project) is a partnership project for Middle Years students (Years 5-9) in regional schools with a focus on multimedia learning and community engagement. The program engages students to work in teams to plan, research, document, write scripts for, film, edit and present a documentary project that focuses on the school and/or communitys historical background OR an issue of importance to the school community. It also engages teachers in a comprehensive Professional Learning experience. Upon completion, schools will be encouraged to present the final documentary projects to the local community in a public showing at a civic building or town hall. This facilitates a bringing together of local community leaders, school staff, families and local young people to create enhanced opportunities for engagement and understanding for the entire community. The program will be delivered by Alfred Brash Soundhouse staff and the Arts Centre appointed artists and educators over a period of up to a maximum of ten contact days and for a cohort of up to sixty students.

In an African Field Trip, We visited Kokrobitey Institute for few days. During the stay, we met a group of Liberian Women in the institute. They were there learning how to make handicraft in order to set up their own business. July 26 the Independence Day of Liberia. It is known that Liberia is the very first slavery country to gained independence from the USA in 1847. Since1989, the tragic country has experienced nearly 3 decades war. The recent one just ended in 2003. Women played a vital role in the peace-building and national reconciliation. So, WE had dinner together. They prepared the traditional Liberian Food for us. It was amazing. Words fail me. We watched a movie to gain more information on their background. We sang and we shared stories together. Meeting them has been a wonderful, once-in-a-life-time experience.

As tensions remain high in Cote d'Ivoire the estimated 150000 refugees who fled to north-eastern Liberia show no signs of going back. Poor communities are hosting tens of thousands of refugees but they are running out of food and seeds. The ICRC, with the Liberian Red Cross and the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies are providing tools, seeds and food rations to 3000 host families to avert a food crisis in the period between June and September known as the hunger season.
