Songs of the rice farmers of Samay
Duration : 134 Seconds

AlertNet's George Fominyen reports from the ground in Liberia. In a village surrounded by forest to the east of the Liberian capital Monrovia, women sing as they dig rehabilitated swampland to make way for rice, the countrys staple food. The women of Samay are part of a growing number of farming groups that are being advised by experts to turn to lowland farming to enhance crop productivity, enabling them to produce enough to be able to sell their surplus. The aim is to help tackle food shortages in a country battered by 14 years of civil war and heavily dependent on food imports. We didn't usually work in swamps before but the people who have come to help say we can have three yields in one year on such plots, says Jemama Flomo, spokeswoman of the womens farming group in the village of Samay, 200 kilometers (124 miles) from Monrovia. We are very happy to work on the swamp because we are short of food. Despite progressively improving food production in post-conflict Liberia and favourable agro-ecological conditions, the United Nations says agriculture productivity is still low. Rice imports accounted for 60 percent of total consumption in the year to May 2008 in a country where the farming population is dispersed, crops that depend rainfed agriculture is done with small machinery and processing is limited - all of which heighten the countrys vulnerability to international market shocks, according to the UN Liberian subsistence agriculture is traditionally based on burning ...

Driving thru Liberia
Duration : 79 Seconds

We drove 7 hours from Ganta to Monrovia on a decent enough road for Liberia. We went past thick jungle, old rubber plantations, bush that had been cut for timber or farming. We went through small villages, market towns, rice paddies, small holdings planted with rubber or banana. Life is happening on the roadside, young boysand girls bathe, older boys fish, even older boys drive motorcycle taxis.Girls are selling and shopping, running businesses with their mothers The young are walking to school, the older are walking to shop or sell or maybe get to a doctor or a banker. People pop out of the bush all along the highway. We made our way into the teeming capital, the streets clogged with UN jeeps, government convoys, motorcycles, taxis and people, always people, selling, shopping, rolling wheelbarrows full of toothbrushes or flip flops. People moving through a city of crumbling huts, of the hulks of bombed out government buildings and stores, the wars lingering wounds. And there are signs of rebirth, new grocery stores and banks. The city smells of smoke and exhaust and a thousand other human scents. And always there are little kids waving and older boys and girls looking hard, until you smile and they smile and everyone waves.

Cheating Cheaters of Cheatery: The Amazing Story of Brazil's Cotton War with the US
Duration : 205 Seconds

Pizza Shirt: dftba.com Planet Money: dft.ba In which John Green discusses the insane story of how the United States of America ended up subsidizing the cotton industry in Brazil so that America could continue its own illegal subsidies of its cotton farmers. This year and every year until we end our illegal cotton subsidies, the US federal government will pay $147 million of American tax dollars to Brazilian cotton farmers to make up for our illegal subsidies, which amount to more than $3 billion most years. There's no question that American cotton subsidies create jobs, but there's ample evidence that the same $3 billion could be used to create MORE jobs, either through more efficient direct government stimulus or through just not spending that $3 billion and allowing private industry to create jobs with that 3 billion in capital. This is (one of the reasons) why economists generally hate industry-specific subsidies.
