Realizing Rights with Street Vendors in Liberia
Duration : 305 Seconds

This video provides a glimpse into the lives of street vendors in Liberia and how Realizing Rights and our partners seek to promote the right to decent work for all. Promoting Decent Work in Liberia Over the past three years, Realizing Rights has been supporting efforts by local and national actors in Liberia to address the needs of workers in the informal economy and help foster government policies aimed at promoting decent work opportunities for all. In November 2009, Realizing Rights staff visited Liberia's capital city of Monrovia to hear first-hand the concerns of street vendors and to give voice to their concerns at the highest levels of government. Over a decade of civil war increased the number of Liberian households headed by women. Without skills and education, their best option is selling on the street, surplus goods from their farms, local produce or whatever they can round up. Men who are ex-combatants need a legal livelihood or risk a return to violence. To understand the needs of those in the informal sector, Realizing Rights staff interviewed informal traders about their progress in getting organized and improving their situation and Realizing Rights President, Mary Robinson, visited the leaders within the petit traders union. These pioneering women provided a deeper insight into the pressing needs of their organisation's members and what stumbling blocks remained on their path to greater security and prosperity.

Johnny_Mad_Dog_w-subs.W512.QSS.avi FULL MOVIE
Duration : 5658 Seconds

COPYRIGHT: I DO NOT OWN THIS MATERIAL & IT IS NOT MINE Johnny Mad Dog is a 2008 French/Liberian film directed by Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire, based on the novel Johnny Chien Méchant (2002) by the Congolese author Emmanuel Dongala, and starring Christopher Minie, Daisy Victoria Vandy, Dagbeh Tweh, Barry Chernoh, Mohammed Sesay and Joseph Duo. It follows a group of child soldiers fighting in 2003, during the end of the second Liberian civil war. The actors are mostly aged 10 to 15, all were unknowns when cast; some were themselves child soldiers.[1] The film follows their march towards the capital Monrovia, and follows them in a gritty realistic manner as they move though a series of towns and villages where they terrify and often execute the populace. The soldiers are depicted as almost feral, committing acts of pillage and rape, with scant regard for even their own lives.[2] They are heavily armed, and wear a variety of outlandish outfits -- butterfly wings and a wedding dress -- and have nicknames such as No Good Advice, Captain Dust to Dust and Chicken Hair.[3] Johnny Mad Dog leads the small group of younger militia. He is commanded by the older General Never Die, who feeds the boys cocaine and tells them "You don't wanna die; don't be born".

UN Envoy Calls on Liberians to Ensure Successful, Free, Fair, and Peaceful 2011 Elections
Duration : 61 Seconds

From UNMIL Information Note: July 8, 2011 The Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG) Ellen Margrethe Løj has called on Liberians to ensure successful, free, fair and peaceful 2011 elections, and thereby contributing to sustain the hard peace won in Liberia. SRSG Løj made these remarks in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County on Thursday, July 8, 2011 when she awarded 119 Indian Formed Police Unit II officers with UN peace medals for their support in maintaining Liberia's peace. 'Despite several challenges, the Liberian people have worked hard towards peace and a lot has been accomplished. It is now time to strengthen the peace enjoyed by all," said the SRSG urging Liberians to actively participate in the process and exercise their civic duty. The UN Envoy also called on all political actors to take advantage of the democratic space and express their ideas and views in a way that enhances trust and confidence in the democratic system. The UN Envoy appealed to the international community to continue to support the political process and urged all components of UNMIL to stay vigilant and protect the unbroken peace that has been sustained in the past eight years.
