Sliding Liberia
Duration : 583 Seconds

Sliding Liberia Leave it to the first-timer to start a revolution. Stanford students and freshman filmmakers Britton Caillouette and Nicholai Lidow team up for their new release, Sliding Liberia, a story about war, peace and surfing on the world s deadliest stretch of coastline. Combining an epic quest for perfect surf with documentary-style interviews of local Liberians (including the only Liberia surfer), the directors invent a completely new film genre one where surfing becomes a catalyst for social justice. As pro s Dan Malloy, Chris Del Moro, and Crystal Thornburg follow their friend Nicholai s lead through the war-torn country in search of what could be the best wave setup in Africa, they are forced to recognize the harsh realities of their surroundings. Shot in a hybrid of 16 mm, video, and archival footage, Sliding Liberia has won awards at several major film festivals, including the Grand Prize at the Alpinist Film Festival, the Emerging Filmmaker Award at X-Dance, and Best Surf Film at the Byron Bay Film Festival, and boasts media coverage in several major surf and non-surf publications worldwide. The last two [surf films} I saw were also...the most new-feeling surf movies in years: the Abberton brothers Bra Boys, and a rough cut of Nicholai Lidow and Britt Caillouette s Sliding Liberia. Both are fascinating for their sideways looks at the surf culture. Surfing performance isn t the issue, or even a secondary interest of these two; instead, they re trying to ...

Restrepo - Grand Jury Prize Sundance Film Festival - Trailer
Duration : 287 Seconds

Restrepo - Trailer - Restrepo, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, award-winning journalists Tim Hetherington (Liberia: An Uncivil War) and Sebastian Junger (the books The Perfect Storm and the upcoming War) embedded with the soldiers of Second Platoon, Battle Company, as they fought to build and maintain a remote 15-man outpost in Afghanistan's rugged Korengal Valley named Restrepo, after a platoon medic who was killed in action, which was one of the most dangerous postings in the US military. Hetherington and Junger avoid outside commentary and politics to present the war as it is actually lived by soldiers, through their own eyes and in their own words — their backbreaking labor, deadly firefights, boredom and camaraderie — the terrifying and exhilarating experiences they can never forget.

YACOUBA, MASKED SECRETS
Duration : 218 Seconds

This exceptional documentary discovers the Yacouba, an African native tribe living in Guinea, Liberia, and Cote d'Ivoire. They are known as the "people of the mask" and love to dance and sing in various rituals, the Yacouba dancer dolls represent this traditional dancer. They also produce many drums which they use for their various festivals. The masks represent the home of the spirit of a dead ancestor. When someone dies their soul enters a mask and when a person wears the mask they are able to give life to the spirit which lives in the mask. Through rituals and observances the masks constantly reaffirm the supernatural world in the life of the Yacouba.

Don Askarian's Film School - Eng. Part 1
Duration : 39 Seconds

Don Askarian's Film School - Eng. Part1 And fourth, it's not primarily stories or scripts, not characters, or philosophies, not actors, not social ideas, not ideas in general, not themes that interest me in a film; what interests me above all in a film is the film itself, it must be a physical-spiritual-aesthetic-filmic experience, one that's either there or it's not. That's what I know, and where it comes from -- nobody really knows where it comes from, least of those who teach it. If the film is there, it is not because it has been defined by the audience, not by the producer/director, not by ratings, not in Cannes or in LA, no, it is realised through the film itself, in the context of the film, by every film, every film that has already been made and by every film that's going to be made in the future, because there is a constant dialogue going on between all films, including those as yet unmade. To recognize this deep secret reality and law of film, and to obey, yes, even to serve them - that is what I call Ontological Film Making.
