Its always disconcerting when you get off the airplane to be greeted by airport security asking your name. I'd just arrived in Beirut for the first time and was slightly concerned my trip was going to be spent in a jail cell when I realised my hotel had arranged for a personal escort to arrivals. Wondering which Hollywood celebrity I'd been mistaken for I enjoyed the moment as the immigration queue parted like the Red Sea and an incredible trip began... To the uninitiated (or in fact those initiated by CNN) you'd be forgiven for thinking that Beirut was a rather troubled city, though anyone who reads the likes of Tatler and GQ will know it as an emerging force in the world of all things epicurean. Inspired by a love of Lebanese food I decided a 4 day trip was in order to carry out a gustatory reconnaissance mission and the starting point was traditional cuisine. For an authentic insight into a country's cuisine a great place to start is the local farmer's market and the Souk el Tayeb in Beirut doesn't disappoint. I was fortunate enough to meet the organiser of the market Kamal Mouzawak and quickly realised that this market goes way beyond a simple amalgam of local produce. For Kamal the market is practically a socio-political statement that people from myriad different religious, political and idealistic backgrounds can be united through a common love of all things edible. Terrorist Attack - A bomb 1 mile away from my apartment in Bangkok, Today this terrorist blew himself up, loses both legs, filmed with camera by my house. This is crazy. I've been living in Bangkok, Thailand for over a year and never seen anything like this. This happened at Sukhumvit, Soi 71 by the Pra Khanong BTS. Sources say that it was a Iranian bomber who was left in his underwear after a bomb bounced off a tree. I'm still in shock about this terrorist attack or whatever their want to call it, so sick! During our first visit to Syria as a family, we took this bus trip from Damascus to Aleppo on a very hot day back in July of 2008. In a strange way, Aleppo felt like home despite the appearance of chaos in the center of the city, the intense heat and a few other minor inconveniences. Aleppo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world; it has been inhabited since the beginning of time. This very ancient city has managed to remain intact despite all the upheavals, the wars and the devastationg earthquakes that befell this great town. Few cities can match the glory of Aleppo and its 6000 year old history. Its great citadel is said by to be of very high mystical value (Ie, a central Spiritual hub, a hangout for saints, an astrological gateway to other planets and galaxies and a major portal or a wormhole used by (Ahlul Khatwa) or (Jumpers) who are depicted in common Sufi lore as being capable of instantaneously teleporting themselves to anywhere on earth or onto other planets. History of ancient Lebanon Evidence of the earliest known settlements in Lebanon was found in Byblos, which is considered to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and date back to earlier than 5000 BC. Archaeologists discovered remnants of prehistoric huts with crushed limestone floors, primitive weapons, and burial jars left by the Neolithic and Chalcolithic fishing communities who lived on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea over 7000 years ago. Lebanon was the homeland of the Phoenicians, a seafaring people that spread across the Mediterranean before the rise of Cyrus the Great. After two centuries of Persian rule, Macedonian ruler Alexander the Great attacked and burned Tyre, the most prominent Phoenician city.
