Architecture Middle East Pierre El Khoury : Contemporary Architecture for the Lebanon and the Middle East / produced by Joseph D. Brakhya. The architecture of Pierre El-Khoury offers some of the finest examples in mastering the creation of buildings that are modern, contemporary, and technologically advanced, while enjoying traditional architectural features, themes and elements, in ways that respect and celebrate traditional Lebanese symbols and meanings, in relation to the built environment.

2010 Aga Khan Award for Architecture, Shortlist - American University Campus, Lebanon
Duration : 107 Seconds

One of the 19 nominees for the 11th Cycle of The Aga Khan Award for Architecture Location: Beirut, Lebanon (West Asia) Client: American University of Beirut Planner: Sasaki Associates with Machado and Silvetti Associates Completed: 2007 ongoing Design: 2001-2002 Site size: 240'000 m² The master plan for the American University of Beirut was developed to shape and guide the development of the university's century-old campus over the next 20 years. Situated on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean, the existing campus is composed of more than 80 academic, residential and administrative buildings, primarily of neo-Moorish and modern design that represent different eras of architectural development. The master plan provides architectural, landscape and urban design guidelines to serve the existing and future needs of the university. It articulates an integrative landscape plan that demonstrates a subtle use of topographical conditions to enhance the existing landscaping, in particular that of the green and wooded middle campus at the heart of the university with its lush environment and dramatic views towards the sea. The plan addresses improvements to the campus infrastructure, proposing new facilities such as classroom buildings and parking structures. It covers the renovation of existing buildings and preservation of historic structures; the expansion of the medical campus and its integration with the main campus; and the building of a new sports centre and business school ...

19. Baroque Extravaganzas: Rock Tombs, Fountains, and Sanctuaries in Jordan, Lebanon, and Libya
Duration : 4375 Seconds

Roman Architecture (HSAR 252) Professor Kleiner features the baroque phenomenon in Roman architecture, in which the traditional vocabulary of architecture, consisting of columns and other conventional architectural elements, is manipulated to enliven building façades and inject them with dynamic motion. This baroque trend is often conspicuously ornamental and began to be deployed on the walls of forums and tombs in Italy already in the late first century AD But baroque architecture in Roman antiquity was foremost in the Greek East where high-quality marble and expert marble carvers made it the architectural mode of choice. At Petra in Jordan, tomb chambers were cut into cliffs and elaborate façades carved out of the living rock. The cities of Miletus and Ephesus in Asia Minor were adorned with gates and fountains and libraries and stage buildings that consisted of multi-storied columnar screens. The lecture culminates with the Sanctuary of Jupiter Heliopolitanus, a massive temple complex at Baalbek in Lebanon, with Temples of Jupiter and Bacchus in enormous scale and with extreme embellishment, and the Temple of Venus with an undulating lintel that foreshadows the curvilinear flourishes of Francesco Borromini's S. Carlo alle Quattro Fontane in seventeenth-century Rome. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Baroque Architecture in the Roman Empire 11:51 - Chapter 2. Exploring Baroque Elements in Italy 23:41 - Chapter 3. Baroque Facadism at Petra 41:39 - Chapter 4. The Baroque in Ancient Asia ...

Saving Beirut - Lebanon
Duration : 701 Seconds

December 2010 Beirut is well-known for it's diverse history, and architectural beauty. With historical buildings being destroyed in favour of modern housing, is the promise to protect the past too little too late? As Beirut leaves conflict well behind a property boom is well under way. But now there are fears that the castles and grand homes that make up the city's history are being forgotten and in most cases, replaced. New campaigns to pass laws to protect Beirut's heritage are causing a stir, "Lebanon without heritage is meaningless! Lebanon without identity is meaningless!". Salim Wardy, Minister of Culture, states, "Well, we're waiting to see the law passed. We're trying our best to preserve the heritage buildings we still have". With 5000 years of history in the balance, the people of Beirut can only hope that what's left of their past will remain intact, "I think that Beirut in times of peace has been more disfigured and destroyed than times of war". Arabic-Web-Lebanon's history crumbles as developers move in
Duration : 156 Seconds

Once world-renowned for its wealth of Ottoman and French architecture, Lebanon's capital now boasts soaring skyscrapers to rival many a metropolis. As construction companies continue to seek new land, the few remaining traditional houses are rapidly being demolished or simply disappearing into the shadows of their towering new neighbours. But some Beirut residents are trying to save what remains of their architectural heritage -- taking on the developers in an often complex game of political wrangling. Out of the Ashes by Marie-Thérèse Sarkis
Duration : 207 Seconds

I love the lebanese architecture, the old balconies, the triple-arched pointed windows, and the warm colors of the peeling paint. All too often in Beirut these beautiful buildings are in a sad state of disrepair. I see these beautiful old houses and try to imagine what they were like in their glory days and what happened to the people who used to live in them. Wishing they could be restored to what they once were, "Out of the Ashes" was my senior project at Notre Dame University - Louaize Lebanon. Two matte paintings of an old street in Beirut were done; one in its destroyed condition and one renewing it. The matte paintings were done using Adobe Photoshop and a camera projection for animation was done using 3D-Studio Max. Moreover, compositing which consists of the transition animation, adding people, and extra elements was done using Adobe After Effects.

3d Video Animation GREEN ISLAND project
Duration : 105 Seconds

Winter Design 3d Video Animation for the GREEN ISLAND architecture project. Studio Pession Associato Architecture Project. 3d Computer Graphics Animation video to present Green Island Architecture Project in Beirut, Lebanon. CG Animation by Winter Design. www.winterdesign.it http Info, Pictures & Architecture Details about the Project: picasaweb.google.com "The intention is that of realizing an offshore complex comprising a marina, residential buildings, and a luxury hotel. These will be located on an artificial island, which can be built at different distances from the mainland. Access to the complex will be via a sort of bridge. The primary concept behind this proposal is that of locating a structure away from the shore so as to eliminate its environmental impact on the surrounding coastline, which will remain untouched. Another key feature of the Green Island is its energy self-sufficiency. This is made possible by integrating technologies designed to harness energy from the water, sun and wind. The ring-shaped channel created between the island and the breakwaters is designed to capture the natural movement of the sea, whose effects will be used to generate electricity using underwater turbines. A second series of turbines could be fixed to the bridge's piers. These will work whenever wave conditions on the surface of the sea are right.." Click here for secure sales on Createspace.com: www.createspace.com Architect IM Pei has created three structures that all may have been built to point at the hexagonal structure in the ruins of the temple of Baalbek, Lebanon. Baalbek may represent a hidden datum of the ruling class. Also discussed are how Thomas Jefferson's octagonal estate, Poplar Forest points the way to the International Peace Garden as does the octagonal structure of the Powder Magazine in Williamsburg, Virginia. Why do these structures point to the IPG?
