Animals Lebanon worked with the Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Interior to confiscate a hyena. The hyena was kept for four years in a small cage outside of a pet shop after being caught from the wild.

An Oregon Humane Society rescue team will arrive at the OHS shelter at approximately 2:40 pm with 14 injured cats rescued last night from an apartment fire in Lebanon. The cats, including 9 adults and five kittens, suffer from smoke inhalation and other injuries that are not life-threatening. They will be treated at the OHS Holman Medical center and, after they recover, they will be offered for adoption. The cats were treated last night by Dr. Victoria Murdoch of Lebanon's Animal Clinic after firefighters brought the animals to the clinic. OHS had been previously in contact with the owner of the cats. The owner wanted to relinquish the pets to OHS because she was overwhelmed with caring for so many animals in her apartment on E St. in Lebanon. The OHS rescue team arrived this morning to find the apartment severely damaged by fire. At least three cats were found dead that the scene of the fire.

Through a fieldtrip to Aammiq reserve-Lebanon- my students got aware of the danger of extinction some animals are facing. Why are they endangered and how can they help is what my students got acquainted with. By visiting their home they learned about these animals' habitats and how to avoid spoiling it. We hope you'll be encouraged to do something similar for the animals' sake and for your own sake too. After all, we shouldn't mess with nature or with the environment.

Each week thousands of live cattle undertake a three week journey from the Amazon port of Belem in Brazil to Beirut in Lebanon. Cattle are crammed into trucks in the burning Amazon heat. For four days they will be unable to move or lay down and will receive no food or water. Those that fall are trapped and injured. At the ship, the use of electric prods for loading further distresses the weakened cattle. Crushed against unfamiliar animals, the cattle can injure each other in their agitation. Heat stroke, trauma and respiratory disease will all be killers on the seventeen day voyage. On arrival in Lebanon, cattle are often slaughtered in inhumane ways that violate religious requirements. After weeks of needless animal suffering the consumer is misled into believing the meat is Halal. Humane slaughter close to home, would not only end the cruelty, it would create jobs in Brazil.

In animal welfare news, migrating birds are protected in Lebanon. Considerable numbers of our feathered friends, including ones considered endangered, fly across Lebanon twice annually. The non-profit organization European Nature Heritage Fund (or EuroNatur) and the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon are working together to safeguard the plumed travelers. A mobile bird watching carriage has been set up, and in summer, a Bedouin tent serves as an information center. With cooperation from the Lebanese Ministry of Education, schoolchildren are also being given the facts about the importance of ensuring the conservation of our precious winged co-inhabitants. Our sincere thankfulness, European Nature Heritage Fund, the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon and the Lebanese Ministry of Education, for your collaborative endeavor. May avian angels continue to grace our skies in safety and joy for countless centuries to come.

Every week, hundreds of millions of farm animals endure journeys, sometimes lasting days, weeks or months, in cramped conditions on their way to slaughter. They experience stress and exhaustion, rough handling, hunger and thirst, extreme temperatures and unsanitary conditions as they are transported live across the world. As a result, the animals suffer horrific injuries, diseases are spread and many die before reaching their destination. We already have the technology to transport fresh chilled and frozen meat, and the science to prove the welfare benefits of local, humane slaughter. For these reasons, long distance transport is not only cruel, it is unnecessary.
