And finishing with the Catholic Church, Basilica of Aglona. This church supposedly houses another painting of Miraculous Mary Mother of God. We are definitely "Churched Out"...

The Latvian Railway history museum was founded on August 30, 1994, along with the establishment of its two branches in Riga and Jelgava. In Riga, the museum is situated on the left bank of the Daugava River at Uzvaras Boulevard in an old engine warehouse There are more than a thousand items, documents and photographs in the museum collection. Communications and signaling equipment, tools and instruments of railroad repairmen, uniforms and distinguishing badges, station interior objects, tickets and delivery notes are all on display. Station buildings and railway bridges built during the time of first Republic of Latvia, the history of the railway evolution in Riga city, as well as Latvian Railway personnel are shown in the exhibited documents and photographs. The model railway of the Livberze and Spare stations, A. Kraulis, A. Straume, J. Boge and other specialists of "New technical station of Jurmala" created the model railway, using the scale 1:87. They designed a real situation at Livberze and Spare stations in the 1960's. On operation there are a diesel locomotive M62, passenger and freight carriages and a DR1 type diesel - engine train.

www.TravelsWithSheila.com We got to Rezekne late in the afternoon for a one-night stay and after checking in, immediately headed for some dinner. There really isn't much to see in Rezekne with the exception of a few churches and memorials and we needed a respite. FOOD at Mols Restaurant. A typical, small but charming little place with traditional food. Because the owner spoke limited English, we ended up ordering the worst wine ever. Did we still drink it? You bet! A vegetable salad, huge double pork chops that resembled a big "schnitzel" rather than a pork chop. Sated, to bed and tomorrow, a castle instead of churches. Hooray!

Still moving right, we see The Guilds Small and Large, Jacobs Barracks, The Latvia War Museum, and The Powder Tower. As we look far out over the city we can see the Rigas Ports. Looking down, we can see Livu Square, The building known as the Cat House because of the figure of a Cat on its roof. Looking far out across the city we can see more builds. Moving to the right more, we can see the Monument of Freedom, the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, and German Embassy. Still moving right, we can see the Latvian National Opera, and another view of the city. Looking down we can see the roof of Saint Johns Church. Moving to the right more, we can see the Riga Railway Station ...

Each part is 10 minutes long, so if you don't get through it all in one setting, feel free to return as many times as you want to complete your journey through time past. When entering the tiny Latvia of the former times that hides unobtrusively behind the pine forest at Lake Jugla, dont strive to perceive it as a reality for it was a reality only to those who have gone long long ago. But the objects, structures and households still continue to exist. You, as a visitor and a stranger will be rewarded with the intimacy of these treasures of our predecessors from times past. This feeling, like any reminiscence of contemporary man, may be vague, imperfect or too subjective though nursed by many and winnowed by the time. And yet, when walking into the dim rooms of our forefathers and bending your head to the low lintel do remember the symbolic meaning of the movement and pay homage to the history of Latvian people. On 14 January 1991, in response to the previous day's massacre at the Vilnius television tower when Soviet troops attacked unarmed crowds - estimated to number between twenty and sixty thousand - killing sixteen, several of whom were run over by tanks, and wounding over 500 more, people from all over Latvia converged on Riga to set up barricades in a do or die situation for the breakaway Baltic republic. Two days later saw the first victim of the Riga barricades when Ministry of Transport driver Roberts Murnieks, a member of a volunteer unit guarding the Vecmilgravis Bridge, was shot in the back of the head by Russian troops. ---- On 20 January 1991, at 9:07 PM, OMON forces from the Soviet Interior Ministry, known as the Black Berets and members of other, unknown military units launch an attack against the Interior Ministry of Latvia Raiņa bulvāris 6. During the 30-minute exchange of machine-gun and rifle fire, five men were killed; militia officers Vladimir Gomanovič and Sergei Konoņenko were shot killed. Near the ministry, filmmaker Andris Slapinš and high school student Edijs Reikstinš were shot and killed. Cameraman Gvido Zvaigzne dies of his wounds several days later. All were unarmed and shot by snipers who had orders to eliminate all cameramen recording the event. There is also a sixth stone similar memorial in memory of Raimonds Salminš, whose van was machined-gunned by Soviets in August of the same year. ---- Also injured during the 30-minute exchange of machine ...
