Come join "TheCeļotājs" visit to the outside area of the Latvian National Museum of Art located at Krišjāņa Valdemāra iela 10a. The main building of the Latvian National Museum of Art on Krišjāņa Valdemāra iela is one of the most impressive in the Park and Boulevard Circle area of Riga. It was designed by the museum's first director, the Baltic German architect and art historian Wilhelm Neumann and built in 1905. The structure, as well as the parameters of the exhibition rooms, corresponded to the level of requirements required standard for an art museum in the Europe of at the previous turn of the centuries. The majestic façade is designed in the baroque and classicist styles; the sculptural group of the central fronton was created by the sculptor August Volz. The interior of the building -- in the lobby and the ornaments of the staircase banister feature elements of Art Nouveau. The top-floor lobby is adorned by with six decorative semi-circle circular paintings by the great Latvian painter Vilhelms Purvītis and a master of Estonian classical art Gerhard von Rosen. The building is a listed architectural landmark of national significance. Reconstruction and restoration work is scheduled in the foreseeable future. The permanent exhibitions of the museum trace the development of professional art in the Baltic region and Latvia from the mid-1700s to the present day, as well as feature featuring a number of significant episodes periods in the Russian art of from the 18th ...

Natalie's paintings are being exhibited in fine art galleries and she has very ambitious plans for the future. We met Natalie in her art studio next to the City of London. The artist admits that in almost every artwork she is painting herself. "At exhibitions I've often been asked where I developed my painting skills and style. I'm proud to tell people that I graduated from the Latvian Academy of Art. Now, more and more people in Britain can appreciate what Latvian art is." After graduation from the Academy, Natalie went to London, where she was introduced to TV mogul Simon Fuller. "He liked my artistic style and he purchased some of my art. That was the financial support that let me stay in London." Natalie was giving private painting lessons back in Latvia, but while abroad she decided to expand her tutoring activities. She spent a few years doing research in art libraries and studying the old masters' techniques. Then she founded her own programme of online video lessons to teach others those techniques. Wilhelms Purvitis was born on March 3, 1872 in the Zaube district in Latvia. He died on January 14, 1945 in Bad Nauheim, Germany. He was reburied in Riga in 1994. He was primarily a Painter. He studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts from1890 until 1897. Upon graduation from A. Kuindzhi's Workshop of Landscape Painting, he won The Grand Gold medal award. He was also a member of a variety of artists' associations such as the "Rukis"; the "Mir iskusstva"; and the "Kunstverein." Wilhelms Purvitis is considered to be the founder of the Latvian national school of landscape painting. During his lifetime, he also accomplished significant educational and administrative work. He was the head of the Riga City Art School (1909 - 1915). He founded the Latvian Academy of Arts and was its first rector from 1919 -to 1934. He directed the Workshop of Landscape Painting (1921 - 1944); the Visual Arts Workshop at the Faculty of Architecture, the University of Latvia (1919 - 1940); and the Riga City Art Museum (1919 - 1940, 1941 - 1944). He was also an academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1913). He won a Bronze Medal at the World Exhibition in Paris (1900). He was also a Gold medallist at the exhibition of Münich Secession (1901) and the holder of the Fatherland's Award (1938). In 1944, he emigrated to Germany. RIGA, Latvia (13 February 2011) -- Yesterday I finished a large painting that I have entitled "Shimmerings". It is a fantasy rendering of the reflections of Amsterdam's famous row houses and tulips. Actually this is two painting series designed to be displayed side by side. Each canvas is 80 x 120 cm (31.5 x 47.2 inches). You can see the process of how it was created over a period of weeks.
