The Latvian Railway history museum was founded on August 30, 1994, along with the establishment of its two branches in Riga and Jelgava. In Riga, the museum is situated on the left bank of the Daugava River at Uzvaras Boulevard in an old engine warehouse There are more than a thousand items, documents and photographs in the museum collection. Communications and signaling equipment, tools and instruments of railroad repairmen, uniforms and distinguishing badges, station interior objects, tickets and delivery notes are all on display. Station buildings and railway bridges built during the time of first Republic of Latvia, the history of the railway evolution in Riga city, as well as Latvian Railway personnel are shown in the exhibited documents and photographs. The model railway of the Livberze and Spare stations, A. Kraulis, A. Straume, J. Boge and other specialists of "New technical station of Jurmala" created the model railway, using the scale 1:87. They designed a real situation at Livberze and Spare stations in the 1960's. On operation there are a diesel locomotive M62, passenger and freight carriages and a DR1 type diesel - engine train.

Latvia's history during WWII is both complex and tragic. The country was occupied by the Soviets in 1940, invaded and occupied by the Nazis in 1941 and re-occupied by the Soviets in 1944. During the first Soviet occupation, tens of thousands Latvians were deported or executed. As a result, many Latvians viewed the Nazi invasion of 1941 as a liberation, and saw the Legion as a way of fighting back against a worse enemy. It wasn't a Latvian national army, but equally, it wasn't a unit formed primarily to further German racial war aims. The Legion was formed in 1943 and served as a combat unit on the Eastern Front. During its two-year existence, over 100000 Latvians fought in its ranks.

A peaceful demonstration in Doma square, Riga, Latvia with 10000 participants against Latvian government's mishandling of economic crisis and poor economic situation transformed into agression and all-out riot shortly after demonstration's official end. About 1000 people tried to storm Saeima (Latvia's government headquarters) and attacked riot police with cobblestones and bottles. Police cars were set ablaze and turned over, shops were looted and windows smashed. Police responded to crowd's actions with truncheons, tear gas and firing rubber bullets. For first time in independent Latvia's history police declared high alert in capital. There were 106 people arrested and for 51 people (among them - policemen) medical care was needed. Riot has been described as one of the worst from 1991's collapse of Soviet Union. In this video people can be seen storming Saeima and chanting "Atlaist Saeimu!" (Dismiss Saeima!)

Director: Ilze Burkovska Jacobsen, Norway, 2008, 55 minutes Tale Kalna is nothing short of a Latvian legend. Shortly after she was born in 1947 her father was imprisoned, tortured, and sent to Siberia simply because he owned a farm. Like most other Latvians of her generation, it became a dream to once again own land. For this dream to become reality, Tale endured some historical political moments: the USSR occupation, Latvias hard-fought independence, the fall of the red army, and eventually the joining of the EU. Throughout these tumultuous decades she managed to raise two beautiful daughters, work as a propaganda specialist, bring opera to the countryside, and advocate for better rural transit. Tale Kalnas thoughts have never been limited by the borders of her own little farm. Her tale is told through the eyes of her eldest daughter, director Ilze Burkovska Jacobsen, who began filming mama during glasnost and perestroika. Ilze affectionately chronicles over sixty years of Latvian history through the labours and accomplishments of her mother. With candid narration we learn that in 1985 something unexpected happens. The Soviet Union gets a leader who walks among the people. Mikhail Gorbachev thinks like mama. The country needs agricultural reform. This was a golden time for Tale, a passionate and patriotic woman who rented, and eventually owned, one of the first independent farms in the Republic of Latvia. July 2010) Kiruvere Muinaslaager is a gathering of re-enactors and enthusiasts of Iron Age, whose goal is to reconstruct the specific historical period of Estonia and its surrounding areas. In their goal the re-enactors and enthusiasts are relying upon the studies of archaeologists and historians. The historical period of Kiruvere Muinaslaager is set between the 9th and 12th century AD (roughly the years 850-1150 AD) and geographically centred on Estonia.
