This is footage from Day 3 of this year's Baltica Festival in Latvia. The Baltica Festival takes place each summer in one of the Baltic States, so every third year it is in Latvia, as it was this year. The Baltica Festivals, I believe, started in 1986 and were a major part of the movement that led to the Baltic States' independence from the Soviet Union. The festival always takes place in a variety of locations in each of the host countries. This year it opened on a Th near the town of Sigulda; Fri it was in Riga; Sat it took place in different locations throughout the Latvian countrside, and Su it closed with a concert and ceremony in the very picturesque town of Kuldiga. This is footage from Sat in the village of Kolka, which is located on the coast at the point where the Baltic Sea and the Bay of Riga meet in the Kurzeme or Courland region of Latvia. More specifically, this is footage of two groups from Latgale. Latgale is a region of Latvia that has long fascinated me; it is considered by many to be the most rural part of Latvia, and it shares a long border to the east with Russia. The Latgallian dialect is quite distinct from the rest of Latvian, and Latgallians are considered a distinct group within the Latvian nation, though there is a small, small minority who consider the Latgallians a distinct Baltic ethnicity seperate from both Latvians and Lithuanians. 24th Latvian Song and Dance Festival Festival held in Mežaparks (Riga, Latvia) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: The Latvian Song and Dance Festival is an important event in Latvian culture and social life. The All-Latvian Song and Dance Festival has been held since 1873, normally every five years. During the festivals exhibitions of photography, art and folk craft also take place. Events and competitions leading up to the event occur throughout the period between festivals. Approximately 30000 people altogether participate in the event. [1] Although usually folksongs and classical choir songs are sung, recently modern popular songs have been incorporated into the repertoire. The 24th Festival was held in July 2008. The main events were held at Mežaparks in Riga. After the Soviet invasion and annexation of Latvia, festivals continuing in the Latvian SSR, now celebrating the Soviet family. The festival tradition was continued in exile, first in Displaced Person camps after WWII, primarily in the western zones in Germany, then in the United States, Canada, and Australia. The Song and Dance Festival abroad is currently held every four years, alternating between the United States and Canada.

The story of „Laime Pilniga" began in 2006. when four enthusiastic musicians- Ervins, Marcis, Janis and Elvijs started their muscial adventures and experiments. In year 2007 band started to do concerts and quickly gained public attention because of their strong live performances. In autumn of 2007."Laime Pilniga" realesed their first single „Hei Babe" which with success debuted in latvian radio stations. 2008. was a year of breakthrough for „Laime Pilniga" - band was victorious in two biggest group competitions in Latvia- „Cocacola Soundwave" and „Rock Legion", and with the help of MTV realesed their first video-clip for the song " I'm in love with the money" . Also band had their first foreign concerts in Poland( Coke Live music festival) and Lithuania (Be2gether festival) In the beginig of 2009. „Laime Pilniga" was chosen to be a warm-up band for russian supergroup „Mumiy Troll". In summer „Laime Pilniga" was playing in all biggest latvian festivals- „Postivus AB", „Baltic Beach Party", „Fonofest" sharing the stage with world stars like „Anathema", Pete Doherty, Sinead O'Connor. Also band took part in „Rock nights" festival in Lithuania and „Lelle" festival in Estonia. www.facebook.com Akacis, a musical group that existed from 1977 into the 1990s, was the longest lived Latvian-American rock band of its time. While groups like Čikāgas piecīši and Trīs no Pārdaugavas performed and were influenced by traditional songs, Akacis was one of the first Latvian-American groups to be guided by more contemporary sounds, with aspects in its music of pop, hard rock, progressive rock, and even jazz rock, folk and reggae. The group performed throughout North America and Europe at Latvian song festivals, American Latvian Youth Organization (Amerikas latviešu jaunatnes apvienība, or ALJA) events and many other functions. The band also toured Latvia during the cultural exchanges of the Third National Awakening from 1989-1990. The groups name means pit in a bog in English, and is similar to the literal definition of the word quagmire, something the group would later allude to when it gave itself the more American name of Quags.
