Travel to Laos to see the beautiful landscapes in Luang Prabang and interact with the locals who are soft-spoken and very friendly. Vientiane is for those who prefer a greater selection of foods in a very relaxed city. Laotian language sounds sweet and friendly.

Words include: Fruit, Banana, Cabbage, Broccoli, Green Beans, String Beans, Onion, Potato, Eggplant, Pineapple, Apple, Strawberry, Coconut, Tamarine, Vegetables, Tomato, Dragonfruit, Durian, Lime/Lemon, Mango, Orange, Salad, Spinach, Garlic, Rice, Plain Rice, Sticky Rice, Peanuts. Note: some of the literal meanings are simply the words broken up into their constituent parts. Together they mean something else. Its just helpful to know the words for two reasons: remembering them (Onion is a big smelly head) and to learn more words ('falang' is a 'foreigner'). We reviewed everything we learned so far and I found several words to be very confusing. Since Lao is a tonal language and English is NOT, this is a recording of some very similar words (or just some similar ideas) to begin to hear the difference. Sometimes, context is all that really helps to hear the words. The words we are going over are: [Tiger, shirt, mattress], [lock, key, dog, puppy of the dog] - (the concept of the lock and key is similar to the idea behind a mother and her children), [pants, the number 2], [fork, the number 3], [hair or fur*, moving objects* (usually heavy)], [a person*, 'to stir'*], [skin*, 'to watch a movie'*] Note: some words are identical and some have different tones. I marked with an asterisk the ones that are identical words but used differently. We have these in english... "To", "Too" and "Two" are an easy example. The word for hair/moving objects is different from the word for a person/'to stir' ... listen to the tone.

Drop the 's' from Laos when describing a person, place, or thing. - A Lao person, not a Laos person. - Lao food, not Laos food. - Lao language, not Laos language. - I am Lao. I am NOT Laos. I do realize that some people prefer to use 'Laotian' instead of 'Lao.' This video is not here to debate that usage. I interchange Lao and Laotian sometimes. I hope to do a live version of this soon. Maybe a Lao song karaoke video also. INTRODUCTION OF LAO HISTORY PROGRAM: Lao has a vast history that spans over a thousand years divided into several important periods. Tragically for the Lao people, that wealth just withers away because of the general lack of knowledge or interest in Lao history. In a country where a large majority is illiterate, recorded Lao history that can gleamed from schools and books is neither widely learned nor sufficiently taught. Additional, well written volumes of Lao history are scarcely available in the Lao language. Worse is that the people who became masters of Laos, form the colonial era through the present time, manipulated the recording of Lao history to gain political and popular support. Also, the rulers of countries neighboring Laos rewrote their history with regards to Laos for their own reasons. These uses of propaganda resulted in different generations of Laotians being taught different versions of "history." RFA feels that its history is very important in that listeners can learn the true history of Laos, whether ancient, modern or contemporary. RFA is mobilizing its resources to make it more interesting and entertaining for listeners in Laos and abroad.
