History of Vientiane - Laos Part 1
Duration : 582 Seconds

Vientiane (pronounced /vjɛnˈtjɑːn/, Lao ວຽງຈັນ Wiang-jun; Thai เวียงจันทน์ Wiang-chan, IPA: [wíəŋ tɕàn]; literally "City of Sandalwood") is the capital and largest city of Laos, situated in the Mekong river. Sri Sattanak, or Sisattanak (Lao: ສີສັດຕະນາກ; Pali: श्रि शत्तनक् शिसत्तनक्), is a former name of Vientiane. It is often confused with Sri Sattanakanahut, the Pali name of Lan Xang, the Kingdom of the Million Elephants. Sisattanak now is the name of one of the five districts of the city Vientiane. The name of the city is derived from Pali, the liturgical language of Theravada Buddhism. Its original meaning is "royal sandalwood grove" or "city of sandalwood", this tree being highly valued in classical India for its fragrance. In modern Lao, the meaning of Vientiane is ambiguous, and is often mistakenly believed to mean "city of the moon", because the words for 'moon (chandra (चन्द) in Sanskrit)' and 'sandalwood (chandana (चन्दन) in Sanskrit)' are written and pronounced identically as 'jan'. However, the name in Thai, เวียงจันทน์, retains the etymologically correct spelling, and clearly indicates "city of sandalwood" as the meaning. The romanized spelling "Vientiane" is of French origin, and reflects the difficulty the French had in pronouncing the hard "j" sound in the Lao word; a common English-based spelling is "Viangchan", or occasionally "Wiangchan". The great Laotian epic, the Phra Lak Phra Lam, claims that Prince ...

The Last King of Laos
Duration : 219 Seconds

His Majesty Savang Vatthana or Samdach Brhat Chao Mavattaha Sri Vitha Lan Xang Hom Khao Phra Rajanachakra Lao Parama Sidha Khattiya Suriya Varman Brhat Maha Sri Savangsa Vadhana was the last King of Laos. He became king in 1959 upon the death of his father King Sisavang Vong. He had previously served as prime minister and regent. He faced many challenges with the end of the colonial relationship with France, the war in neighboring Vietnam and the rising threat of spreading communist revolution. He tried to keep Laos neutral in the ideological conflict sweeping Indochina but the fighting spilled over as the Pathet Lao tried to gain control of the country. In 1975 the communist revolution finally took over the country and King Savang Vatthana was forced to resign. The Pathet-Lao kept him as a puppet advisor for a time but finally arrested him and his family and put them in a concentration camp. He, the Queen and Crown Prince were later all reported dead though the communist government has never revealed the circumstances.

RFA - Lao History, Part 1
Duration : 451 Seconds

INTRODUCTION OF LAO HISTORY PROGRAM: Lao has a vast history that spans over a thousand years divided into several important periods. Tragically for the Lao people, that wealth just withers away because of the general lack of knowledge or interest in Lao history. In a country where a large majority is illiterate, recorded Lao history that can gleamed from schools and books is neither widely learned nor sufficiently taught. Additional, well written volumes of Lao history are scarcely available in the Lao language. Worse is that the people who became masters of Laos, form the colonial era through the present time, manipulated the recording of Lao history to gain political and popular support. Also, the rulers of countries neighboring Laos rewrote their history with regards to Laos for their own reasons. These uses of propaganda resulted in different generations of Laotians being taught different versions of "history." RFA feels that its history is very important in that listeners can learn the true history of Laos, whether ancient, modern or contemporary. RFA is mobilizing its resources to make it more interesting and entertaining for listeners in Laos and abroad.

laos sword dance
Duration : 215 Seconds

It's my father and I representing the Laos culture at the 2007 Mosaic. The style of the Laos sword dance ("fon dap") originated from soldiers that defended the country in war hundred of years ago. The dancing moves can be tied back into actual fighting moves used in battle. During the New Year celebration the soldiers would come and dance incorporating their fighting skills. Over time, this became a type of dance. There are many variations to the Laos sword dance. This one in particular was developed by my father from my his many years as a martial arts teacher and student and his knowledge of Laos history.
