Duration : 877 Seconds

More Videos: www.RodMcNeil.TV In this episode, Rod first discovers the coffee culture of this capital city, a city that seeks to preserve and celebrate its connections to many cultures—French, German and more. Many of the historic buildings are in fantastic condition. This piece showcases the many eras of Vientiane. And what does Vientiane have in common with Beverly Hills? Watch and find out. Enjoy the tour of Wat Sisaket as well—the most famous and oldest wat in the region. Not too far away, the Phat That Luang Stupa, golden in the sunlight, reaches skyward above the city. Does the local currency include coins? Find out! See the most-stunning victory monument as well, built after freedom from the French occupation. And what a view from the top! Rod also shows us the architectural magnificence of the Arc Patuxai followed by a walk on the boardwalk along the Mae Kong river. And the sunset. Wow! Rod wraps up his journey on the Thai side of the river in Nong Khai. What an adventure! Lao Cooking Class in Vientiane, Laos
Duration : 295 Seconds

Always on a quest to connect with the local culture of the countries I visit, in Laos I decided to take a cooking class with Lao Experiences. In a lovely garden on the banks of the Mekong River, three Lao ladies walked me through the preparation of Mok Pa, fresh fish pounded with local spices and wrapped in steamed banana leaves; vegetables roasted on skewers, whole fish crusted in salt and roasted over hot coals, two types of dipping sauces, spicy papaya salad, and sticky rice and mangoes. Not only was it a perfect way to learn about Lao culture, it was a delicious way to spend an afternoon. To read more about my round-the-world travels, visit my blog, holeinthedonut.com.

Introducing Pakse, Laos—on RodMcNeil.TV
Duration : 547 Seconds

More Videos: www.RodMcNeil.TV Facebook www.Facebook.com In this episode, Rod first crosses the border into Pakse, Laos near the Thailand town of Ubon Ratchathani. Exploring the multicultural influences (French, Chinese and more) of the area, we learn that "Pakse" refers to the mouth of the river. Discover how two fellow Aussies (Tim and Meredith Shaw) are traversing the nation. Hint: According to Meredith, it is "better than Jenny Craig." The Lao-Nippon bridge is quite impressive, as you will see, opened as recently in the year 2000 and a gift from the Japanese. A glimpse at a former "private residence", now a hotel, which boasts "1000 windows" is demonstrative of the luxuries of previous regimes. Xuanmai Guest House, Rod's home away from, a brand new and on the edge of town, is quite charming, with its own pond, and a lot of bamboo! See for yourself, on Rod McNeil.TV! Luang Prabang, Laos - Buddha Cave Trip
Duration : 265 Seconds

This very popular ½ day trip from Luang Prabang costs between 80000 to 90,00 Kip and is easily organized from one of the many travel agents along the main road or from most hotels. The 1/2 day tour starts from one of the smaller landing places on the Mekong and begins by heading up stream toward a whisky making village. The initial leisurely pace is short lived and we soon pick up speed. We stick fairly close to the bank of the river. There is a lot of activity along the river banks and on the river itself, including a floating petrol station where we pause briefly to refuel. The banks of the river are heavily cultivated with different crops at various stages of development. There are also fish traps tethered to poles a few metres out from the river bank. The basic tour boats are comfortable enough for a few hours but the option of a more luxurious experience is also available. After about 90 minutes we arrive at the first stop, a whisky making village with its fairly rough looking bamboo landing pier and equally rickety stairway to the top. A rice whisky tasting is offered but not universally taken up by the group. The village is fairly basic but the people are friendly, trying to supplement their income by making & selling woven fabrics and souvenirs. Back down the stairs to board the boat again after about 20 minutes or so, we cross to the other bank on our way to Buddha Caves. As we arrive it is clear that this is a very popular spot. The landing pier is an ...

History of Vientiane - Laos Part 1

Vientiane (pronounced /vjɛnˈtjɑːn/, Lao ວຽງຈັນ Wiang-jun; Thai เวียงจันทน์ Wiang-chan, IPA: [wíəŋ tɕàn]; literally "City of Sandalwood") is the capital and largest city of Laos, situated in the Mekong river. Sri Sattanak, or Sisattanak (Lao: ສີສັດຕະນາກ; Pali: श्रि शत्तनक् शिसत्तनक्), is a former name of Vientiane. It is often confused with Sri Sattanakanahut, the Pali name of Lan Xang, the Kingdom of the Million Elephants. Sisattanak now is the name of one of the five districts of the city Vientiane. The name of the city is derived from Pali, the liturgical language of Theravada Buddhism. Its original meaning is "royal sandalwood grove" or "city of sandalwood", this tree being highly valued in classical India for its fragrance. In modern Lao, the meaning of Vientiane is ambiguous, and is often mistakenly believed to mean "city of the moon", because the words for 'moon (chandra (चन्द) in Sanskrit)' and 'sandalwood (chandana (चन्दन) in Sanskrit)' are written and pronounced identically as 'jan'. However, the name in Thai, เวียงจันทน์, retains the etymologically correct spelling, and clearly indicates "city of sandalwood" as the meaning. The romanized spelling "Vientiane" is of French origin, and reflects the difficulty the French had in pronouncing the hard "j" sound in the Lao word; a common English-based spelling is "Viangchan", or occasionally "Wiangchan". The great Laotian epic, the Phra Lak Phra Lam, claims that Prince ...

It is also Laos's largest city. The estimated population of the city is 200000 (2005) while the number of people living in the Vientiane metropolitan area (the entire Vientiane Prefecture and parts of Vientiane Province) is believed to be over 730000. Vientiane is located at 17°58' North, 102°36' East (17.9667, 102.6). [1] The city will host for the first time the 25th Southeast Asian Games in December celebrating the 50 years of SEA Games. Sri Sattanak, or Sisattanak (Lao: ສີສັດຕະນາກ), is a former name of Vientiane. It is often confused with Sri Sattanakanahut, the Pali name of Lan Xang, the Kingdom of the Million Elephants. Sisattanak now is the name of one of the five districts of the city Vientiane. The great Laotian epic, the Phra Lak Phra Lam, claims that Prince Thattaradtha founded the city when he left the legendary Lao kingdom of Muong Inthapatha Maha Nakhone because he was denied the throne in favor of his younger brother. Thattaradtha founded a city called Maha Thani Si Phan Phao on the western banks of the Mekong River; this city was told to have later become today's Udon Thani, Thailand. One day, a seven-headed Naga told Thattaradtha to ...
