Fires raged for a fourth day in the southern city of Osh, three miles from the border with Uzbekistan. The official count was 138 dead and nearly 1800 injured since the violence began last week, but an Uzbek community leader said at least 200 Uzbeks had already been buried, and the Red Cross said its delegates saw about 100 bodies being buried in just one cemetery. Erica Marat says that at this point there is no relationship with the US and Russian military bases inside Kyrgyzstan and the conflict, other than humanitarian aid that has been distributed.

Late in the day, opposition leaders said they had taken control of the country. Rumors placed the country's President in hiding on the American airbase Manas.

The first reports out of Kyrgyzstan were that the rise in utilities prices sparked the protests and violence but obviously there has been tension for a while now. Alisher Khamidov says that Kyrgyzstan has not had any clear structure; however the protesting factions are the first signs of structure or perhaps civil war.

The United States plans to build a new military base in Kyrgyzstan, the US originally planned to open the base before Kyrgyzstan's former leader was ousted. US defense secretary Robert Gates says the US will decrease spending, so why are they continuing with this base? The parliament in Kyrgyzstan has voted to close an air base key to US efforts in Afghanistan, as Washington urges Nato to send more troops to the war-torn country. The closure of the Manas US airbase will make it increasingly difficult for soldiers and supplies to reach Afghanistan. In parts of Central Asia, rates of tuberculosis have reached record levels. Rates are particularly high in prisons where the disease spreads easily.
