Kyrgyzstan's interim government has appointed their leader Roza Otunbayeva as the republics interim President until next year. There will be a national referendum in late June, took charge of the country after President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was ousted. There has been continued unrest and instability since the coup, including a recent riot that attempted to storm a university.

Three days of mourning have been declared in Kyrgyzstan after at least 176 people, including women and children, were killed amid days of unrest between Kyrgyz and ethnic Uzbeks. The United Nations has called the fighting "orchestrated, targeted and well planned". Kyrgyz authorities admit that the toll could be several times higher than the official numbers. Oppositon leaders in Kyrgyzstan say they are in control of the country following days of nationwide protests. The health ministry says at least 65 people were killed and 400 injured in clashes on Wednesday between protesters and police. Roza Otunbayeva, the former foreign minister and head of the Social Democratic Party of Kyrgyzstan, an opposition group, says she is now leading a provisional government. Opposition followers killed Kyrgyzstan's interior minister, took the deputy prime minister hostage and captured state television in a deadly revolt Wednesday against President Kurmanbek Bakiyev.
