Great Manaschi Sayakbai Karalaev
Duration : 1066 Seconds

Recitation of the Epic of Manas by Great Manaschi Sayakbai Karalaev. The Epic of Manas Manas is the classic centerpiece of Kyrgyz literature, and parts of it are often recited at Kyrgyz festivities by specialists in the epic, called Manaschi (Kyrgyz: Манасчы). Manaschis tell the tale in a melodic chant unaccompanied by musical instruments. Kyrgyzstan has many Manaschis. Narrators who know all three episodes of the epic (the tales of Manas, of his son Semetei and of his grandson Seitek) can acquire the status of Great Manaschi. Great Manaschis of the 20th century are Sagimbai Orozbakov, Sayakbai Karalayev, Shaabai Azizov (pictured), Kaba Atabekov, Seidene Moldokova and Yusup Mamai.

Sayakbay Karalaev (1894-1971). Manaschi
Duration : 77 Seconds

Sayakbay Karalaev (1894-1971), who is called the "Homer of the twentieth century," was one of the last "chong manashchys" from whom the Manas trilogy (Manas, Semetei, and Seitek), consisting of half a million poetic lines, was recorded. Saiakbai Karala uulu mostly known as Karalaev, was born in the Issyk-Köl region of northern Kyrgyzstan. His family was poor and they had to work for wealthy Kyrgyz to earn their living. Karalaev began reciting Manas when he was about sixteen to seventeen years old. His grandmother played a key role in instilling the "seeds" of Manas in her grandson. Karalaev heard the main stories of Manas from her. Well-known or great manaschys like Saiakabai Karalaev usually did not say that they learned Manas from someone or previous master-singers. Becoming a great manaschy involved some kind of spiritual transformation of the singer who had a vision by seeing a special dream in which he was visited by the hero Manas himself or by other main characters in the epic. Saiakbai Karalaev also connected his singing of Manas with a visionary dream. He saw that special dream in his early twenties. His dream is described in the following way: "On his way from Semiz-Bel to Orto-Tokoy, he saw a white yurt in place of an old big black rock. He became very scared from the loud noise that came from the sky and fainted. He then woke up and entered the yurt where he was offered food by Kanļkei, the wife of Manas. When he came out from the yurt he met a man who told ...

Ancient book exhibition
Duration : 122 Seconds

Books have to be stored in certain conditions with defined temperature. In order to get rid of dampness the heating system is being changed in the national library. Aitby Samarbekovna is pleased more than others because she is the curator of ancient publications. "Ancient books have unpleasant smell and the ventilation system does not cope with this. We cannot air the quarters properly," said she. Absence of proper ventilation system is the second problem of the national library. Whereas with restoration of rare books, such as hand-written Koran, dated by the end of 18th century the situation is even worse. As it turned out there are no professional restorers in the country who can manage it. In other countries ancient publications are being carefully treated -- modern masters decorate the pages and bring second life to the damaged by the time literature. "This book was hand - written. Iran masters are trying to reproduce this type of writing. It is called tazhib -- meaning 'writing in gold'" Today Iran publishers represented various book -- covers and extracts from Koran made on canvas. "There were no machines that could do that back at those times. All the publications were handwritten. The presented works are very well made and this style is known as Iran style of writing," said Mohammad Reza Saburi, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary ambassador from Islamic Republic of Iran to Kyrgyzstan. The opening of the exposition during the saint Muslim month Ramadan is not ...
