Kyrgyzstan's ongoing conflict has had a devastating effect on the country's economy. The ethnic violence that erupted in June has disrupted trade networks, leading to a massive increase in food and fuel prices. The United Nation says more than a quarter of the population across the country are stuggling to get sufficient food. Al Jazeera's Robin Forestier Walker reports from Southern Kyrgyzstan.

Health officials in central Asia's Kyrgyz Republic worry that the food crisis there is taking the heaviest toll on the country's mothers and young children. There are men and women and when a potential employer comes we all rush up to him and on a good day, well earn a hundred and fifty Soms. Despite the lack of work, Turgunaly is determined that today hell buy his four children meat an expense he can ill-afford. He also manages oil and pasta but theres nothing left for vegetables. The impact of the global recession is really starting to hit home. The Kyrgyz Republic is particularly vulnerable because half a million of its five million people work abroad mostly in Russia and the money they send home helps keep the economy afloat. The UN says that up to 400 thousand people have fled from the ethnic violence in Kyrgyzstan. It also warns that many are facing shortages of food, water and medical supplies. Meanwhile, Kyrgyzstan's interim government says it could close the US Manas air base in the country if the UK doesn't extradite Maksim Bakiev, the son of the ousted President.

Southern Kyrgyzstan is now locked in a humanitarian disaster, with ethnic violence having taken the lives of more than 110 people. As a result of the chaos, the regions of Osh and Dzhalal-Abad are suffering power cuts and food shortages. Tens of thousands of people have fled to Uzbekistan, desperately trying to escape the violence.

The United States is urging Kyrgyzstan to create conditions for a safe return of Uzbek refugees uprooted by an outburst of ethnic violence on the Kyrgyz-Uzbek border. The clashes have killed at least 2000 people and set off a massive wave of refugees, with 400000 people crammed in squalid camps with little access to clean water and food. Robert Blake, the US assistant Secretary of State, said an international investigation must be held into the possible causes of the violence after visiting the border camps.
