Artscollaboratory partner ArtEast invited Cascoland to participate in 'Boom-Boom', the 4th Bishkek Contemporary Art Exhibition in Kyrgyzstan from 25 September - 7 October 2008 to present the work of Cascoland and to execute a satellite project. This invitation to Boom-Boom served as a first orientation towards the implementation of a larger Cascoland project in Kyrgyzstan in 2009. The Cascoland delegation to Boom-Boom consisted of artists Fiona de Bell, Bart Majoor, Bert Kramer, Jan Korbes, Gitte Nygaard and Roel Schoenmakers. Main objective of the participation in Boom-Boom and Cascoland Kyrgyzstan 2009 was to adress issues around public space, architecture, artistic infrastructure and identity in the Central Asian republics. As part of the satellite-project as executed by Cascoland at Boom-Boom an inflatable entrance gate became an interactive part of the opening of the exhibition. On 3 October a 4-hour Cascoland intervention turned a public road into a tea garden. In choosing a striking location and placing objects or actions that don't belong there, the environment will respond. We play with reality, rules and the specific functions a space has. Change those functions and visualize the rules that apply to everyone by making things suddenly work in a different way. It enables us to look again and wonder why the environment is organized in a certain way and not different.

In many American minds this is Kazakhstan (video). I am going to show you the real Kazakhstan with its history, culture, great nature, and amazing architecture. Kazakhstan is a country in the heart of Eurasia. It's bordered by Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. It's the ninth largest territory in the world and the world's largest landlocked country with many different types of nature. Kazakhstan has a vast flat steppe extending from the Volga in the west to the Altai Mountains in the east and from the plains of western Siberia in the north to oases and deserts of Central Asia in the south. Kazakhstan's history goes back thousands of years; I will give you a brief overview. The indigenous Kazakhs were a nomadic Turkic people who belonged to several divisions of Kazakh hordes. Their tribes fell under Mongol rule in the 13th century and they were dominated by Tartar khanates until the area was conquered by Russia in the 18th century. During the USSR Kazakhstan became agricultural and industrial center. The Soviet Union built the largest space center in the world called Baikonur in Central Kazakhstan, where the first man in space Yuri Gagarin was launched from. Kazakhstan obtained its independence from the collapsing Soviet Union in 1991 and proclaimed its membership in the Commonwealth of Independent States. S ynopsis North Korea, the movie filmed in two versions: Slovenian and English, 2009, in HDV technology, 90 minutes. It shows Pyongyang, the city of regime monuments, the rarely seen territory of the Demilitarized Zone which divides the northern part of the country from the southern, the meeting with the Assistant Minister for Tourism of North Korea. The film reveals an invisible system of local control and the control of few foreigners. We see the worshiping of late Kim Il Sung and the glorification of the unique spectacle of Arirang, where 100000 performers produce images from the history of the country and ideological present. It gives a comprehensive view of the mysterious and almost inaccessible North Korea. Silk Road (Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan), Slovenian and English film, 2008, in HDV technology, 90 minutes. Engineer Samuel Laboy designed a geometrical dimensionless plan for a Great Pyramid's model, independently from the Great Pyramid's dimensions and properties, using no numbers, formulas or calculations. This dimensionless design seems curious and interesting. However, when he calculates the dimensions created in his pyramid's model, using just a single number, and every section is compared with the Great Pyramid's structure built by the Egyptian Engineers, that he definitely proves that both designs are exactly equal in all their sections. This is something that never has been done before, and cannot be accounted as a theory. Anyone can do the same exercise and get the same results and conclusions. This discovery represents one of the most important findings about the Great Pyramid's geometry in history. That's really what you call it. I think it's actually the Chilonzor autovoksal (or however you spell it) but nobody calls it that. Anna and I sort of hid while Mavjuda negotiated a good price in our absence. We ended up in a car with a man from Samarkand who kind of looked like a middle-aged Jerry Lewis and an Uzbek woman with a Kyrgyz passport (I assume she is an Uzbek who was living in Kyrgyzstan but now lives in Uzbekistan, due to the weird borders, but if she elaborated on this, I didn't notice. I just know she kept repeating where her passport was from. The long drive through the Uzbek countryside was really interesting. It's cotton harvesting time, and cotton is Uzbekistan's primary industry. So, there were a lot of people harvesting the fields by hand, and lots of people meandering across the highway from one field to the other... which was sort of problematic since our car had a radar detector and I think our driver was going 160 km/hr-- there was a lot of people and donkey cart dodging involved, but no one got hurt.
