The Central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan has its own unique brand of Islam. Now, it has opened its doors to more fundamentalist strains of the religion. But will it help defuse social tensions, or lead to radicalization and the erosion of freedoms? The spectacle of tens of thousands of Kyrgyz men praying in the capital's central square, just underneath the Vladimir Lenin monument, says much about Kyrgyzstan. Even in its heyday, Communist ideology was never able to mobilize as many people as Islam does nowadays. But the unity of Muslims at prayer masks the vast differences in theology and lifestyle that exist among various branches of Islam in Kyrgyzstan. Over the past decade, the country has become a testing ground for Islamic missionaries of all kinds. Some of them have less in common with each other than they do with Jews or Christians. Kyrgyz people converted to Islam in the 17th century but they were never over-zealous about their faith. Mixed with shamanism and nomadic customs, the Kyrgyz version of Islam has long been more of a moral code than a religious doctrine. It has helped shape a society where women are just as active and ambitious as men, and where religiosity went hand in hand with a good education. Now, though, that is starting to change. Human rights groups are accusing the government of Kyrgyzstan of using increasingly brutal tactics against religious groups. More than 30 people were recently arrested and accused of belonging to an Islamic group, which authorities say is a "terrorist organisation". As of April 2012, she completed more than 19000 kilometers, while opening up intimate opportunities to capture photographs of nomadic lives and religious cultures of Western China and the borderlands. Eleanor's photography explores the "Invisible China", the often enigmatic and somewhat unknown parts of the world. She now continues through the borderlands, such as Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan with an estimated return to Xinjiang and Tibet in late Summer. Western China and the neighboring post-Soviet countries are rich in cultures. Which religion and traditional customs play a paramount role in the lives of the these people. November 2010 In June this year ethnic tensions in Kyrgystan overflowed and a conflict ensued which killed hundreds and displaced hundreds of thousands. Now it is emerging that the government may have been behind the attacks. Months after the conflict in June and the Kyrg government has yet to respond to calls for an investigation. Kuranda Seyit's report suggests government involvement in attacks on Uzbeks might be why. "although the initial violence was between two groups...the overall violence was much, much, much worse and was perpetrated against Uzbeks. It was clear that it was systematic. It was planned". Seyit brings us footage, smuggled out of Kyrgystan, of the aftermath of attacks on Uzbeks. Kyrgs always claimed the conflict was instigated by Uzbeks, "the Uzbeks started this". However Seyit and Human Rights Watch in their investigations have found evidence that the government may have been at the heart of this ethnic cleansing "there are serious concerns...government forces either actively participated in, or facilitated, attacks on Uzbek neighbourhoods".
