rt.com Protests turn violent as opposition rallies in Kyrgyzstan 07 April, 2010, 12:06 A state of emergency has been imposed in the capital and several regions of Kyrgyzstan amid violent clashes between police and anti-government demonstrators. Unconfirmed reports suggest up to 17 people have been killed in Bishkek after police opened fire on crowds massing around the main government building. Over a hundred people are reported to have been injured in Bishkek. The demonstrators are demanding the current authorities step down. The president of the Kyrgyz republic has ordered a curfew be imposed in the capital. The bulk of the protesters have now been dispersed in the central part of the city of Bishkek, according to Intefax. But the demonstrators are still attempting to storm the main government buidling. The main demand is the resignation of President Bakiev, who is accused of nepotism, raising energy prices, and illegally selling a hydro-electric station. People are demanding an early election, Shamil Murat, a Kyrgyz opposition activist from Talas, told RT. Police are using tear gas and concussion grenades in an effort to disperse thousands of people gathered in front of the government building in Bishkek. Kubat Otorbaev, a local journalist from Bishkek and bureau chief of Azattyk-Media, told RT that: Special police forces and the presidents guards are protecting [the building].
