Dr. Alanoud Al Sharekh, IISS Corresponding Senior Fellow for Regional Politics, spoke at IISS Middle East on March 6, 2012 on the subject of "Kuwait's Democratic Experiment." Dr. Alanoud assessed the division of legislative and executive powers between the country's elected National Assembly and its Council of Ministers. She stated that the absence of cooperative incentives between the two bodies meant that they would likely remain in a state of deadlock, and was a "recipe for failure." Dr. Alanoud examined the impact of the Arab awakening on Kuwaiti politics, stating that it had shown the need for elites in the region to appear supportive of democracy, and that the suspension of political life by leaders in any state was no longer an option.

Today, more than a year after the Tahrir Square protests toppled the Mubarak regime, tension remains between the old guard and the new. As the Muslim Brotherhood works to assert political authority, the military elite, as represented by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, seeks to retain some vestige of power in government. Dr. Ghabra posits that the ongoing attempts on the part of the SCAF to retain control over Egypt's political future will not succeed, given the new political awareness and involvement of Egyptian citizens. In this edition of the show Russell reviews the film; Mesocafe, directed by Ja'far Abd al-Hamid. By February 2003, Iraq had endured over 12 years of draconian UN Sanctions, imposed to punish the Saddam Hussain regime for the invasion of Kuwait. A UN agency estimates 500000 Iraqi children to have died since the sanctions were introduced. Meanwhile, the world was fixated with the debate on the existence of any weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Opposing the Saddam regime from within Iraq, Yusif is an underground blogger who risks his life to come to London to campaign for the immediate lifting of UN Sanctions. As political intrigue thwarts his heartfelt attempts to highlight the suffering of his people under the embargo, he finds himself increasingly taking refuge at Mesocafé, a little Baghdad in West London. With their Arab, Assyrian, Jewish and Kurdish heritage; members of the Iraqi community allow him into their lives, sharing with him their stories and dreams. Here, he meets Zaynab, the cafe owner and purveyor of advice for marriage and love; for work and business. There is Tawfiq, a young Iraqi refugee spending the little money he has on phone-cards to call his wife in Jordan. There is Suad, a successful PR executive, unable to come to terms with the death of her young husband at the end of the 1991 war.
