From Wikipedia: Changdeokgung (Changdeok Palace) is a palace set within a large park in Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea. It is one of the "Five Grand Palaces" built by the kings of the Joseon Dynasty and because of its location east of Gyeongbok Palace, Changdeokgung is also referred to as the East Palace. The literal meaning of Changdeokgung(昌德宮) is "Palace of Prospering Virtue". Changdeokgung was the favored palace of many kings of the Joseon Dynasty and retained many Korean elements dating from the Three Kingdoms of Korea period that were not incorporated in the more formalistic Gyeongbokgung. The Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism organizes an amazing street festival on the street in front of Jogyesa, an amazing temple in Jongno-gu. Over 1000 people put together the festival and roughly 300000 people attend each year. Following the festival, the streets of Jongno light up with an amazing display of lanterns. I noticed Hyunwoo was acting weird when he found out we were visiting Boseong Green Tea Fields. I got separated from our group, and when I finally found Hyunwoo, he literally disappeared before my eyes. On this day in 1919, Korean nationalists first signed the Korean Declaration of Independence from Japan. At around noon, it was publicly read for the first time in this very park. March 1st is still celebrated as a national holiday, as it was this critical step that eventually led to Korea's freedom from the brutal oppression of the Japanese occupation. Incheon Grand Bridge - South korea. 16 October 2009 - Macquarie Korea Infrastructure Fund ("MKIF") today announced that the Incheon Grand Bridge1 will open to traffic at 12:00 am on 19 October. At 12.3km long with a main cable stayed span of 800m the new Incheon Bridge will be one of the five longest of its type in the world. Its 33.4m wide steel/concrete composite deck will carry six lanes of traffic 74m above the main shipping route in and out of Incheon port and link the new Incheon International Airport on Yongjing Island to the international business district of New Songdo City and the metropolitan districts of South Koreas capital, Seoul. The cable stayed section of the crossing is 1480m long, made up of five spans measuring 80m, 260m, 800m, 260m and 80m respectively: height of the inverted Y main towers is 230.5m. A 1.8km approach span and 8.7km viaduct complete the crossing, both constructed with precast prestressed concrete box girder decks. Foundations are drilled piles 3m in diameter. Total cost is more than $1.4bn, which is funded through a Private Partnership in Investment (PPI), the first in South Korea to involve an outside strategic investor. They have indicated that a request has been made to increase the funding, and thus the numbers eligible to participate. Since the 2011 tours all sold out, it is vitally important that you get registered early. You can always cancel later for personal or health reasons, but you may miss out on the 2011 program if you procrastinate! The most important requirement is that a veteran must have served "in, over, or around" the Korean peninsula during the period 25 June 1950 to 15 October 1954. Please note: There will be numerous major commemorations in 2011, commencing with the Chipyong-ni Ceremony in May.
