| | Bloggers and Politics in South Korea Duration : 116 Seconds CHEN: South Korean bloggers are not only taking to the streets protesting US beef imports but also becoming influential citizen journalists. Their online claim that beef import could put Koreans at risk of mad cow disease, was watched by two hundred million Internet users a day. STORY: The recent beef protests in Seoul are the biggest South Korea has seen in 20 years. Spurred by a flurry of online gripes that a deal to import US beef put society at risk of mad cow disease - these tech-savvy activists showed that they could take control of political and news agendas. [Do Jung-Gwan, Citizen Journalist]: "We just relied on the established media in the past to get to know the important issues. But it has changed -- we can take pictures ourselves and post them on the Internet. This new culture is changing the way our country does politics." The government was caught off-guard. After winning by a landslide in December's election, the president's approval rating is now barely 20 percent. With technology, activists also became more potent protesters, sending out messages urging friends to meet up at demonstrations and warning them when the police started to make arrests. They didn't just shout slogans - they took pictures, quickly posting them on the Internet - going from activists to "citizen journalists." Some websites went from 40 million pages viewed a day to 200 million. However, there is the need to weed through biased opinions and inaccurate reports. One citizen journalist ... | | Brawl in South Korean Parliament Duration : 66 Seconds It was a hectic scene once again in South Korea's paliament over the weekend. Another scuffle broke out between politicians, which seem to be getting more and more common. South Korean opposition party members clashed on Saturday with parliamentary security guards who tried to end a sit-in protest in the assembly building. More than 200 security guards stormed the rotunda where a large scuffle broke out. Local media said at least 11 protestors were injured during the confrontation. About 100 opposition party members from the Democratic Party and the Democratic Labour Party occupied a hall in the parliament. Their aim was to physically block the path to the main chamber. They want to stop the ruling Grand National Party—or GNP—in its attempt to push through certain parliamentary bills. The main opposition Democratic Party has called conservative President Lee Myung-bak and his GNP's reform bills "evil." | | South Korea President Roh Moo Hyun (1946-2009): The Last Tribute (5 of 5) 5-29-2009 Honolulu News Duration : 303 Seconds 29 May 2009 Seoul, Korea - South Korea's Late President Roh Moo Hyun (1946-2009): The Last Tribute (5 of 5) 5/29/2009 Honolulu News *** Roh Moo-hyun (Korean pronunciation: [no mu hjʌn]) (6 August 1946 23 May 2009) was the 16th President of South Korea (20032008). Before entering politics, he was a human rights lawyer. Roh's pre-presidential political career focused on human rights advocacy for student activists in South Korea. His electoral career later expanded to a focus on overcoming regionalism in South Korean politics, culminating in his election to the presidency. The election was strongly influenced by activists on the Internet, and particularly via OhmyNews—the first time this had ever happened in Korea.[5][6] Roh's election was notable for the arrival to power of a new generation in Korean politics, the so-called 386 Generation, (ie people in their thirties when the word was coined, who had attended university in the 1980s, and who were born in the 1960s).[7][8] This generation had been veterans of student protests against authoritarian rule, and advocated an assertively nationalist line towards the United States and Japan, and a conciliatory approach towards North Korea. They took up many positions on Roh's staff.[9] Despite high initial hopes,[10] however, Roh's administration quickly became dogged by allegations of incompetence, while Roh's frequent indulgence in personal clashes with his opponents and critics eroded public support. | | Elections in Korea - Fierce Campaigning Duration : 148 Seconds During election season in Korea, campaigning is very in-your-face. | | Social mobility in the globalised South Korea - Professor Hagen Koo. ANU, March 2010 Duration : 3882 Seconds One of the most important consequences of globalisation in the world today is increasing economic inequality within and between nations. Globalisation does not simply increase economic inequality: it also modifies the pattern of social stratification and the game of status competition. What happens, however, when social mobility system becomes globalised? Professor Hagen Koos talk examines the changing pattern of social mobility in South Korea as a consequence of globalisation. Koo will focus on the rise of a cosmopolitan strategy of social mobility, the core of which involves sending children overseas for early English education and foreign degrees as well as for other cosmopolitan cultural aptitudes. Professor Koo will argue that cosmopolitanism in South Korea, as in many other societies, does not simply represent a cultural orientation but a new strategy of class reproduction employed by affluent segments of the middle class in this age of globalisation. Hagen Koo is Professor of Sociology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, US and journal editor of Korean Studies. Born in Seoul Korea, he received his BA in Korea and PhD from Northwestern University. Professor Koo has published extensively on the political economy of East Asian development and the industrial transformation of South Korea. His books include the award-winning Korean Workers: The Culture and Politics of Class Formation and State and Society in Contemporary Korea. Currently, he is writing a book on the ... | | Angry South Korean Lawmaker Fires Tear Gas In National Assembly Meeting Duration : 122 Seconds South Korea's ruling party managed to avoid a major fistfight in parliament Tuesday by surprising opposition lawmakers with a sudden floor vote to ratify the nation's free trade agreement with the US But they hadn't bargained for a new confrontational tactic -- a tear gas attack. Lawmakers began filing to the main floor in mid-afternoon after a vote was called at short notice. Opposition politicians had little time to strategize about how to block proceedings and many surrounded the speaker's podium to protest the move. Then, a little after 4pm, as Vice Speaker Chung Eui-hwa readied to call for a formal vote, Kim Sun-dong, a lawmaker from the opposition Democratic Labor Party, detonated what appeared to be a tear gas canister at the podium. Those around him scattered, covering their noses. Mr. Kim was shown on TV appearing covered in powder from the canister, blinking and shouting alone in front of the podium. The chamber was evacuated and Mr. Kim was shown being dragged out. After the gas cleared, lawmakers returned and the vote was completed.
