Stray Animals Rescued on South Korea's Yeonpyeong Island after Shelling Attack
Duration : 101 Seconds

For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com South Korean animal welfare groups went to Yeonpyeong Island on Tuesday to help injured dogs and cats left behind by their owners who evacuated the island after North Korea's attack last week. The artillery shells killed four South Koreans, including two civilians. Most of the 1600 residents fled the mountainous island that lies less than two miles from the disputed sea border and well within range of North Korea's artillery. Now, hungry dogs and cats roam the deserted streets. Members of animal welfare groups took food supplies for the animals and administered first aid to the injured pets. [Jo Hee-kyong, Korean Society for Animal Freedom] "If you abandon dogs, and they produce puppies without people's care, they will become wild dogs. Then you will have to cope with a social problem with many stray dogs all around Yeonpyeong Island." Island residents estimate that there are about 200 dogs and cats on the island. Animal welfare workers said they have helped about 50 dogs and 10 cats so far. [Park So-yeon, Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth]: "We helped dogs with serious cuts from shell splinters. We also saved dogs with broken legs and little dogs attacked by other stray dogs." Tensions on the peninsula are at their highest levels in recent years since the attack, which was one of the heaviest in the region since the Korean War ended in 1953 in a truce without a peace treaty.

Horse fighting - South Korea
Duration : 443 Seconds

June 1999 A fighting ring, a mare on heat and two stallions fighting to the death. It's the new and popular South Korean sport of horse fighting. On an island where horses are usually traded for meat and medicine few are sentimental about watching the proud animals fight. Promoter Kim Byong denies the sport is cruel "Horsefighting simply brings out that basic instinct in an animal," he says. In the midst of the cheering crowd the stallions rear and kick to win the mare. They are awarded marks for the number of bites and kicks they land on their opponent. Weaker horses are occasionally killed. The organisers are hoping the sport will catch on with tourists. And if the spectacle of the fighting fails to draw them there's always the celebratory horsemeat barbecue to follow. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

200 Adoptable Dogs in Daejeon, South Korea
Duration : 28 Seconds

www.AnimalRescueKorea.org This video was taken on a visit to a privately-run dog shelter in Daejeon, South Korea in June 2007. The shelter is not publicly funded, the manager looks after the dogs single-handedly and receives donations of food from local groups of Korean and expat animal lovers. Since this video was taken, more than 100 dogs have found adoptive and foster homes thanks to the tireless efforts of volunteers. The shelter still needs people to clean the grounds and socialize / exercise the remaining dogs. The city plans to shut down the shelter in October 2008 (extension granted thanks to volunteers). If you can help, please visit www.AnimalRescueKorea.org for more information. Thank you so much for caring about South Korea's homeless animals.

Memorial Held for Culled Livestock in South Korea's Foot-and-Mouth Outbreak
Duration : 82 Seconds

For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com or Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Buddhist monks in Seoul held a memorial service for livestock culled due to a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in the country. Activists protested that most of the animals had been buried alive. On Wednesday, Buddhist monks in Seoul, South Korea held a memorial service for the culling of livestock. The culling is an effort by the South Korean government to contain outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease. One Buddhist said she was shaken by the treatment of the animals. [Lee Kyong-ja, Buddhist]: "I was shuddering when I saw animals culled and wondered why my country should suffer from the disease. So I prayed to Buddha there would be no more outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease." In a shopping area in Seoul, about a dozen animal activists staged a protest rally against the culling. [Jeon Kyong-ock, Animal Activist]: "We noticed that more than 90 percent of animals had been buried alive. So we are here to ask the government to cull the animals from a humanitarian standpoint." The South Korean government said on Tuesday that it had culled about 15 percent of its combined pig and cattle population. According to the agriculture ministry, 2.1 million animals and 3.6 million poultry had been killed. The nationwide outbreaks of foot-and-mouth originated in pigs in the city of Andong on November 28.

ANIMAL CRUELTY in Korea
Duration : 142 Seconds

uniteddogs.com Every year, 2.6 million dogs and countless cats are slaughtered and consumed in South Korea. Methods of slaughter include hanging by the neck, prolonged beatings with pipes and hammers, and electrocution. Often, cats are boiled alive, and dogs are routinely blowtorched to remove their fur and to brown their skin. The myth is that the more pain suffered by these animals, the more tender and aphrodisiac the meat is. This idea is generated by Korean dog-meat (boshintang) dealers. Dog-meat stew is not a thousand-year-old Korean tradition, as dog-meat dealers claim. The commercial trade of dogs for consumption began in 1980, when a boom in the Korean economy made the once-scarce "livestock" meats suddenly affordable. At the time, the dog-meat trade consisted of only a handful of dealers, who, fearing loss of business, quickly marketed the myth that dog-meat stew is a traditional "cure-all" health food. Cats are also consumed in S. Korea. Pets and strays are repeatedly bludgeoned with hammers or placed in sacks, which are then pounded on the ground. Often, while still alive, the cats are thrown into large pots of boiling water and cooked with ginger, dates and chestnuts until liquefied to a brown paste called goyangi soju, or "cat juice," which dealers claim will cure rheumatism. Dr. Kim, Sung Yun, a medical doctor and professor researching rheumatoid arthritis at Hanyang Medical School, said in a Chosunilbo newspaper article that "cats are absolutely not ...

1 Million Pigs Buried Alive in South Korea (short version)
Duration : 112 Seconds

No Media Coverage of this totally perverted Mass Murder of the South Korean Government. The animals were buried alive and the caterpillars drove over the earth on the animals to crush them. It was one of the biggest crimes against animals and absolutely disgusting! These people should be punished! Of course, this was politically motivated for not destroying the US build up image of the "good South" and the "bad North".

South Korea Battles Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak
Duration : 86 Seconds

For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com or Follow us on Twitter ☛ http South Korea's President is promising to curb the spread of foot-and-mouth disease in his country. Authorities have so far destroyed around 130 thousand cattle and about 2 million pigs to contain the outbreak. South Korean President Lee Myung-bak pledged Monday to cope with the spread of foot-and-mouth disease in South Korea. So far more than 2.5 million pigs and cattle have been culled to contain the outbreak. The agriculture ministry of Asia's fourth biggest economy says the infected animals would be buried. [Lee Myung-Bak, South Korean President]: "This is the first time our country had to cull more than 130000 cattle and 2 million pigs." The South Korean government is also using vaccines brought from two companies in England and Holland. [Lee Myung-Bak, South Korean President]: "Currently, England and Holland are producing internationally-certified vaccines, but I will seriously consider producing vaccines ourselves." President Lee says the country might face large-scale damage from the disease. The outbreak is expected to subside before the Lunar New Year holiday at the beginning of February, as most animals would have received their vaccinations by then. Major livestock markets across South Korea have been closed now for more than a month.
