It's the oldest and most respected major religion in South Korea. And now it's been spectacularly brought into ill-repute after senior monks from the largest Buddhist order in the country were caught red-handed setting a bad example by indulging in a cheeky little poker game. Gambling in the country is illegal everywhere except for inside just one casino that's in the north east of the country. So it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that these monks - who are from the Jogye Order - seen here smoking, drinking and flipping playing cards on the floor of a luxury hotel room are flouting the law. As soon as the footage was aired on national TV yesterday, 6 of the 8 monks in the room offered to resign. Leader Master Jinjea, a high-ranker from the order -- who wasn't even there at the time - said on local TV 'Those monks committed a foolish act and I confess my sin for their wrongdoings' It was a fellow monk who secretly shot the footage and then tipped off the police and the media. ANCHOR: Tens of thousands of grey-robed Buddhist monks flooded central Seoul today to protest against the president. They say the government's policies favour Christians and hurt Buddhism. STORY: Buddhists criticised Christian President Lee Myung-bak for naming several members of his Presbyterian church to his transition team before taking office in February. Buddhist became upset again when government maps released online in June did not list Buddhist temples. [Bupchun, Buddhist monk]: "We're rallying mainly because of the Lee Myung-bak government's suppression of Buddhism." About a quarter of South Korea's 49 million people are Buddhist and another quarter are Christian, one of the highest percentages of Christians in Asia. One monk, who refused to give his name, said he hoped religion could be free from politics. [Protesting monk:] "The constitution clearly says that religion and politics are separate, but this government isn't aware of that." Last month Buddhists were angered further after police stopped and searched the car of a top Buddhist leader. Lee, who has battled massive street protests in recent months in opposition to his policies, said his government advocates religious neutrality.

Present at the meeting were Jang Jae On, chairman of the Religious Believers Council of Korea; Kang Yong Sop, chairman of the Central Committee of the Christian Federation of Korea; Sim Sang Jin, chairman of the Central Committee of the Buddhist Federation of Korea; Kang Chol Won, vice-chairman of the Central Guidance Committee of the Chondoist Association of Korea; and members of religious organizations. Also attending it were members of the delegation of south Korea's 7 religious orders led by Kim Hui Jung, representative chairman of the South Korean Religionists Council for Peace and head of the Kwangju Archdiocese of the Catholic Church. Speakers at the meeting spoke of the pleasure of representatives of different religious organizations in the north and the south at sitting together and having their meeting for national reconciliation and unity and peaceful reunification. In North Korea there is no Internet. Information is controlled and rationed by the government, which feeds a carefully crafted set of lies and half-truths to its people everyday. Radios and TVs are officially fixed and can't be tuned to foreign broadcasts yet an increasing number of people are managing to keep tabs on the wider world via underground radio reception. Martyn Williams traveled to South Korea to find out the lengths people need to go to when there is no Internet.

Although only slightly larger than the nation of Portugal, South Korea in eastern Asia has built the 13th largest economy in the world. The people of South Korea have overcome the nation's lack of natural resources to make their country a leading exporter of cars and electronic equipment. South Koreans are a part of one of the world's most homogeneous nations. 99.8 percent of South Koreans are of Korean descent. Since their split at the end of WWII, relations between South Korea and North Korea have been strained at best. The 38th parallel that famously separates North and South Korea is the most heavily fortified border in the world. In recent years, South Korea has attempted to reestablish connections with North Koreans by offering humanitarian aid, but the North Korean government's nuclear aspirations and totalitarian rule have made this difficult and often very tense. While South Korea's history has been marked by wars and international disputes, a sound, praying Church has thrived through it all. Its fruitfulness is seen in the number of missionaries it sends out to the rest of the world, second only to the United States. There is a need to reach the South Koreans who are from multi-generational Buddhist families. Yet, South Korea has the potential to become Asia's first majority Protestant/evangelical country.

It's next to halal foot stores, Muslim book stores. Further down block is an entertainment district popular with American troops stationed in South Korea.
