The action followed earlier reports that North Korea had fired over 200 rounds across its western maritime border. Witnesses say the shells hit Yeonpyeong Island in the Yellow Sea where over 60 houses are ablaze. Reports say one South Korean marine has been killed and at least 14 people have been injured. Seoul has since placed the country is on its highest non-wartime alert.

In North Korea there is no Internet. Information is controlled and rationed by the government, which feeds a carefully crafted set of lies and half-truths to its people everyday. Radios and TVs are officially fixed and can't be tuned to foreign broadcasts yet an increasing number of people are managing to keep tabs on the wider world via underground radio reception. Martyn Williams traveled to South Korea to find out the lengths people need to go to when there is no Internet.

The Korean War (25 June 1950 -- armistice signed 27 July 1953) was a military conflict between South Korea, supported by the United Nations, and North Korea, supported by the People's Republic of China (PRC), with military material aid from the Soviet Union. The war was a result of the physical division of Korea by an agreement of the victorious Allies at the conclusion of the Pacific War at the end of World War II. The Korean peninsula was ruled by Japan from 1910 until the end of World War II. Following the surrender of Japan in 1945, American administrators divided the peninsula along the 38th Parallel, with United States troops occupying the southern part and Soviet troops occupying the northern part. The failure to hold free elections throughout the Korean Peninsula in 1948 deepened the division between the two sides, and the North established a Communist government. The 38th Parallel increasingly became a political border between the two Koreas. Although reunification negotiations continued in the months preceding the war, tension intensified. Cross-border skirmishes and raids at the 38th Parallel persisted. The situation escalated into open warfare when North Korean forces invaded South Korea on 25 June 1950. It was the first significant armed conflict of the Cold War. The United Nations, particularly the United States, came to the aid of South Korea in repelling the invasion. The clash, which took place on the Yellow Sea border island of Yeonpyeong, killed two South Korean soldiers and wounded 18 others. North Korea has reportedly fired some 200 shells, setting numerous buildings on fire on the island. Both countries have elevated their threat status and are preparing for potential full out warfare. As we warned two years ago, the military-industrial complex has been yearning for a new conflict since the invasion of Iraq some seven and a half years ago. Back in October 2008, we reported on how the RAND Corporation was lobbying for a war to be started with a major foreign power in order to stimulate the American economy and prevent a double dip recession. The RAND Corporation is a notoriously powerful NGO with deep ties to the US military-industrial complex as well as interlocking connections with the Ford, Rockefeller, and Carnegie foundations. Ever since the sinking of a South Korean warship in March, tensions on the Korean peninsula have been rising. North Korea is threatening to use its "nuclear deterrent" in response to joint naval exercises between the US and South Korea, which are due to begin on Sunday. Eight thousand US and South Korean troops will take part in four days of war games in the waters near nuclear-armed North Korea. For North and South Korea, which are still officially at war, the stakes of these military exercises are high. Bernard Smith reports.

thefilmarchive.org The North Korean Army launched the "Fatherland Liberation War" with a comprehensive air--land invasion using 231000 soldiers, who captured scheduled objectives and territory, among them Kaesong, Chuncheon, Uijeongbu, and Ongjin. Their forces included 274 T-34-85 tanks, some 150 Yak fighters, 110 attack bombers, 200 artillery pieces, 78 Yak trainers, and 35 reconnaissance aircraft. In addition to the invasion force, the North Korean KPA had 114 fighters, 78 bombers, 105 T-34-85 tanks, and some 30000 soldiers stationed in reserve in North Korea. Although each navy consisted of only several small warships, the North Korean and South Korean navies fought in the war as sea-borne artillery for their in-country armies. In contrast, the ROK Army defenders were vastly unprepared, and the political establishment in the south, while well aware of the threat to the north, were unable to convince American administrators of the reality of the threat. In South to the Naktong, North to the Yalu (1961), RE Appleman reports the ROK forces' low combat readiness as of 25 June 1950. The ROK Army had 98000 soldiers (65000 combat, 33000 support), no tanks (they had been requested from the US military, but requests were denied), and a 22--piece air force comprising 12 liaison-type and 10 AT6 advanced-trainer airplanes. As we have exhaustively documented, North Korea's nuclear belligerency was almost exclusively a creation of the US government in that they armed the Stalinist state both directly and indirectly through global arms dealers under their control, namely Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan. While labeling North Korea as part of the "axis of evil," the US government was enthusiastically funding its nuclear weapons program at every stage. Both the Clinton and Bush administrations played a key role in helping Kim Jong-Il develop North Korea's nuclear prowess from the mid 1990's onwards. Just as with Saddam Hussein's chemical and biological weapons program, it was Donald Rumsfeld who played a key role in arming Kim-Jong-Il.
